According to the family of the St. Louis teen who was violently attacked in a viral video, their daughter has still not regained consciousness over a week after the assault, and say the road ahead is long and uncertain.

In the video, which took place on March 8, 16-year-old Kaylee’s head was repeatedly slammed into the pavement in the assault near Hazelwood East High School in Spanish Lake, Missouri. During the attack, Kaylee can be seen beginning to suffer what appears to be a seizure.

According to family attorney Bryan Kaemmerer, Kaylee suffered a fractured skull, resulting in life-threatening brain swelling and bleeding.

The following day, a 15-year-old girl was arrested in connection with the fight. She’s currently being held by St. Louis County Family Court on assault charges.

Following the attack, and it’s viral spread across social media, Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey said the suspect, who continued to brutally beat Kaylee after she had been knocked to the ground and was seemingly unconscious, should be tried as an adult and charged with murder in the unfortunate event of Kaylee’s death.

“We’ve got to reform our juvenile system to ensure that these sorts of issues are addressed,” Bailey previously said. “I’m going to be following this case closely. I think there needs to be some accountability in our juvenile system. People are starting to notice that, and it’s causing problems across the State of Missouri.”

Friends and family of Kaylee have set up two GoFundMe accounts to raise money for her medical bills as well as share updates on her condition.

“We will not know the extent of the brain damage that has occurred until she wakes up but the path to recovery will be extremely hard on the family, not only mentally but financially,” read one GoFundMe account, apparently set up by a friend of Sarah’s family, which has raised over $350,000 to help pay medical bills.

“The road ahead remains long and uncertain. Kaylee’s parents are steadfast by her side, drawing strength from your support,” the GoFundMe creator wrote in an update. “Beyond the financial assistance, your thoughts and prayers have been a source of comfort and strength for Kaylee’s family. It's a testament to the power of community and compassion in times of need.”

“We are all hoping that Kaylee will be ok but until then we have a long road ahead until we know for sure. I am hoping I can help my cousin out of the hospital as soon as possible,” said the creator of the other GoFundMe

“We are so grateful for the amazing medical staff who have been working tirelessly to give her the best possible chance at a full recovery,” read a note in the second GoFundMe, reportedly from Kaylee’s parents. “We know she has a very long road ahead of her but we remain hopeful. We are so overwhelmed by all the support and love.”
