Former Connecticut Senator Joseph Lieberman, known for his run as the Democratic vice presidential candidate in the 2000 election, has died at the age of 82, according to The Washington Post.
His family has cited a fall as the cause of his death.
Lieberman was notably the first Jewish candidate on a major party's national ticket, chosen by Al Gore for the vice presidency in 2000. His public devotion to his Jewish faith was well recognized, and Lieberman was a staunch Zionist throughout his career, despite a general reputation as a centrist.
Following his departure from politics after serving four terms in the Senate, Lieberman's political career concluded in 2013, as noted by The Christian Science Monitor. Despite losing the Democratic primary in 2006, Lieberman successfully secured his Senate seat running as an Independent Democrat, winning 49.71 percent of the vote against Ned Lamont's 39.73 percent.
