Former President Barack Obama is allegedly making strategy calls as he fears Joe Biden could lose to Donald Trump in the two’s 2024 general election rematch.

The New York Times reports Obama is making calls to Jeffrey Zients, the White House chief of staff, and to top aides at the Biden campaign to strategize and relay advice.

The Times states that these strategy calls demonstrate Obama's backing of Biden, but the Paper of Record also shows significant worry and a “grave concern” about the 2024 election outcome from the former president.

Internet commentators weighing in on this story have pointed to Obama’s often quoted words about Biden warning, “Don’t underestimate Joe’s ability to f**k things up.”

Obama’s senior aide, lacking authorization for public statements, emphasized that Obama has “always” harbored concerns about Biden's chances against Trump.

He also stated Obama is ready to stand by his former vice president and fight for victory in an election where outcomes may hinge on narrow margins in a few key states.

PJ Media’s Robert Spencer highlighted that Obama reportedly annoyed Biden’s team with his strong support for Hillary in 2016. A grievance that has likely increased over the years amongst Biden aides.

The Times claims that “several of them work in the White House today, and they believe that Mr. Obama and his advisers sidelined Mr. Biden, whom they think could have changed the course of history and beaten Mr. Trump in 2016.”

Biden stated in a past memoir that Obama told him that if he “could appoint anyone to be president for the next eight years,” it would have been him. However, in 2016, after discussing the stakes with Obama, Biden took himself out of contention so Clinton, the supposed stronger candidate, could run.

Obama notably withheld his endorsement for Biden running against then-president Trump in 2020 until after the Democratic primary, which The Times pointed out also frustrated Team Biden.

Speaking on the reported strategy calls, Spencer wrote, “it's no surprise that Obama would want to make sure that Biden continues to pretend to be president until he is a sprightly 86 years old: Biden’s legacy is Obama’s legacy. The two are forever intertwined in history. And, unfortunately, in American public life.”
