Left-wing activist groups have paved the way for the emergence of a network of websites dedicated to shipping unregulated foreign abortion pills across the United States. These sites operate without age verification or prescription requirements, seemingly unconcerned with state laws prohibiting medication-induced abortions.
An investigation by The Daily Wire revealed how dozens of websites are involved in the distribution of abortion drugs, many of which lack approval from the FDA.
This loophole is particularly exploited in conservative states like Tennessee and Texas, where the ban on abortion can be circumvented with just an internet connection, online payment capabilities, and a shipping address.
For less than $100, The Daily Wire reports individuals can purchase mifepristone and misoprostol without age verification or medical consultation. This means that even young girls can obtain these pills with minimal effort on dubious websites.
A closer look at the websites showcases a blatant disregard for guidelines, with many preferring payments in difficult-to-track cryptocurrencies.
At the forefront of this operation are organizations like Plan C, which openly advocate for the shipping of abortion pills to states with restrictive laws. The site also assures users that their use of unregulated drugs will go undetected by healthcare providers, even urging them to conceal their abortion by claiming it as a miscarriage.
Run by a former Planned Parenthood official, Plan C aims to transform abortion access by normalizing self-directed abortions via mail. Despite bans on abortion pill access, the organization directs women to websites where they can obtain these pills discreetly.
The proliferation of these online abortion pill providers continues unabated despite the legal and ethical implications. These pill providers openly admit to stretching the law, however, none appear to have faced legal challenges thus far. The Biden administration has notably loosened restrictions in recent years, but laws still mandate prescription verification for mail-order pills, a requirement largely ignored by websites like Plan C.
While the FDA warns against the use of foreign-made pills, these websites operate with impunity, enabling easy access to abortion pills even in states where access is heavily restricted, The Daily Wire reports.
The FDA currently permits the mailing of abortion pills, specifically Mifepristone, under the Mifepristone REMS program. However, these pills must be distributed either directly by a certified prescriber or under their supervision, or by certified pharmacies authorized to dispense prescriptions issued by certified prescribers.
