A progressive, anti-police New York City councilwoman is being grilled for her professed beliefs after publicly lamenting the lack of men taking action to address violence against women.

Amanda Farías, a member of the New York City Council from the Democratic party and representing the Bronx, made a post on X on Thursday in response to numerous women sharing reports of being randomly punched in the face by a single man (the man was later identified Shiboky Stora, himself a marginal political figure).

“Where are the men calling this out?” Farías rhetorically asked.

Yet this seemingly innocuous statement took on an ironic valence when considered in context with the councilwoman's voting record, as Farías has been an outspoken opponent of law enforcement throughout her political career.

Her campaign communications highlighted a commitment to “significantly divest from police precincts” and support for “the reduction of NYPD’s operating budget and partnering alongside the community to create real solutions and justice for New Yorkers.”

Upon assuming office, Farías actively participated in efforts that aligned with this agenda, notably contributing to the override of Mayor Adams’ veto of the How Many Stops Act, legislation perceived as anti-NYPD.

Social media users also juxtaposed Farías's post with the case of Daniel Penny, currently facing manslaughter and homicide charges related to his killing of the mentally ill and belligerent Jordan Neely last year.
