Former President Donald Trump extended his condolences to the family of a slain police officer and emphasized the need to restore “law and order” on Thursday.

During the wake of NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller, who was tragically killed during a traffic stop in Far Rockaway, Queens, Trump met with the grieving family, including Diller's widow and 1-year-old son.

Notably, President Joe Biden, along with former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, attended a ritzy fundraiser instead of Diller's wake.

“What happened is such a sad, sad event. Such a horrible thing, and it’s happening all too often and we’re just not going to let it happen, we just can’t,” Trump said in his brief remarks at the funeral.

Trump underscored the need to address the issue urgently, emphasizing the importance of restoring law and order and implementing new strategies to combat such tragedies.

Reflecting on his interaction with the family, Trump recounted his conversation with Diller's widow, Stephanie, and observed the innocence of their young child, highlighting the profound impact of the loss on the family.

Diller was fatally shot during a routine traffic stop. He was struck below his bulletproof vest, and later pronounced dead in the hospital. The suspect, a 34-year-old individual with a history of 21 prior arrests, including serious offenses like first-degree assault and criminal possession of a controlled substance, carried out the attack from the passenger seat of the vehicle.

Trump expressed his hope that lessons would be learned following the tragic event, and he emphasized the need to strengthen and toughen law enforcement efforts to prevent such incidents in the future.

“This is such a sad occasion. The only thing we can say is maybe something is going to be learned. We’ve got to strengthen it up, we’ve got to toughen it up,” he said.

On Thursday, the crowdfunding site GoFundMe announced a remarkable achievement, having amassed over $573,000 from nearly 8,000 donations, ranging from $25 to $5,000 for the fallen 31-year-old NYPD officer.

Portnoy's advocacy gained widespread attention after a poignant video plea circulated on X, where he mourned the loss of Officer Jonathan Diller, tragically slain in the line of duty.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams addressed reporters on Tuesday, highlighting the pressing issue of repeat offenses committed by “dangerous people” in the city.

Expressing concern over the persistent pattern of recidivism among individuals engaging in criminal behavior, Adams emphasized the urgent need to address this challenge. “We've been talking about the severe recidivism of dangerous people over and over again and how do we stop them from coming into our streets,” he stated.

Adams condemned the callous disregard exhibited by perpetrators, noting their indifference to the lives they endanger. “There's a total disregard. They could care less when they discharged that gun if they shot a cop or if they shot someone that was at Selvena Brooks-Powers’ office,” he remarked.

Describing the conflict as a battle between “good guys” and “bad guys,” Adams underscored the imperative to confront criminal activity head-on and protect law-abiding citizens. “These are bad people who are doing bad things to good people. It’s the good guys against the bad guys. And we have to recognize that,” he concluded.
