Publisher Simon & Schuster has terminated its contract with Alex Thompson, Axios’ national political correspondent, for a book centered on the Biden administration.

Two informed sources disclosed this decision to Daniel Lippman at Politico, highlighting the broader trend of lackluster sales for books related to Biden, particularly when compared to the success seen with publications discussing former President Donald Trump.

Thompson responded to the news on X, confirming Politico's report and reaching out to potential publishers, stating, “It’s true. But still writing it and aiming for 2025 to tell the story of the Biden presidency. If you’re a publisher and interested, email/number in bio.”

Initially scheduled for release earlier this year, Thompson's proposed book promised a comprehensive exploration of Biden's presidency, with fresh insights drawn from his extensive coverage of the White House transition.

Thompson, renowned for his in-depth reporting on Biden's administration, chose not to provide comment to Politico, instead opting to quote tweet.

“GABRIEL DEBENEDETTI’s 'The Long Alliance' has sold around 1,500 hardcover copies, according to NPD BookScan, while CHRIS WHIPPLE’s 'The Fight of His Life' has sold around 5,000 and FRANKLIN FOER‘s 'The Last Politician' around 12,000,” Politico wrote.

“That compares to the nearly 1 million copies that MICHAEL WOLFF’s Trump-focused 'Fire and Fury' sold, also per NPD BookScan, and the more than 400,000 copies sold of BOB WOODWARD and ROBERT COSTA’s 'Peril,'” the outlet continued.

Politico reported back in September 2003 that the Biden administration is panning out to be “a bust for the book business.”

Lippman, at the time, attributed this to the administration's “no leak” policy, stating that because of the book's lack of insider information, the books aren't even worth a “hate read: among conservatives.

“It’s a stark contrast from the Trump era, when books containing stunning revelations about dysfunction and chaos — not to mention Donald Trump’s behavior — flew off the shelves,” Lippman said.

Some people online have weighed in on the Simon & Schuster dropping Thompson's Biden book, highlighting that the publisher is still set to publish a children's book by Jill Biden about her White House cat.

Simon & Schuster announced Wednesday that “Willow the White House Cat” will be published in June.

White House aides previously said the cat impressed Jill Biden after it jumped on stage during a campaign stop. She later adopted the cat and named it after her hometown of Willow Grove, Pennsylvania.
