A Brazilian mixed martial arts fighter, while celebrating victory at a UFC championship on Saturday, offered an unexpected article of advice to viewers, admonishing anyone listening to read the work of Austrian school economist Ludwig von Mises and praising the United States Constitution.

At UFC 300, Renato Moicano emerged victorious in his lightweight bout against Jalin Turner, securing his third consecutive win. After his triumph, Moicano expressed his deep appreciation for American values to the audience in Las Vegas.

โ€œI love America. I love the Constitution. I love the First Amendment,โ€ Moicano proclaimed. โ€œI want to carry and own f*cking guns. I love private property.โ€

Further emphasizing the significance of economic knowledge, he urged the audience to engage with specific scholarly works.

โ€œAnd let me tell you something, if you care about your own f*cking country, Ludwig von Mises and the six lessons of the Austrian economic school, motherf*ckers,โ€ Moicano said.

The Austrian School of Economics is a school of economic thought that emphasizes the spontaneous organizing power of the price mechanism and holds that the complexity of subjective human choices makes mathematical modeling of the evolving market practically impossible.

Central to the Austrian approach is the theory of subjective value, which posits that value is not intrinsic to goods but rather is given by the importance an acting individual places on a good for the achievement of desired ends. This school argues against the use of extensive government intervention in the economy, suggesting that such interference distorts markets and leads to inefficiencies and economic imbalances. Austrian economists advocate for strong private property rights, free markets, and minimal government involvement, believing that free-market forces naturally lead to a self-regulating and efficient economy.

Ludwig von Mises, a prominent figure within the Austrian School, further developed its foundational theories, particularly through his work on praxeology, the science of human action. Mises asserted that economic phenomena should be studied from the perspective of the choices and actions of individuals, as these choices underpin the entire economic system. His seminal work Human Action is a comprehensive presentation of his economic theories and argues that economics is a branch of praxeology and must be rooted in the realities of purposeful human behavior.

Mises was a staunch defender of liberalism in the classical tradition, arguing for a capitalist economy as the most rational and effective system for improving living standards. He was critical of socialism and interventionist policies, positing that they lead to economic inefficiency and lack of innovation due to their neglect of individual incentives.

Moicano's recent years in the UFC have seen a remarkable winning streak for the libertarian-reading brawler: Since his loss to Rafael dos Anjos in February 2022, Moicano has not faced defeat in the ring, with wins over Drew Dober in February and Brad Riddell in November of 2022. His recent victory over Turner was a fast-moving exposition of his brutal effectiveness in combat, in which he took Turner down and swiftly ended the fight with a series of punches, leading the referee to stop the match.
