U.S. troops recently shot down several Iranian drones targeting Israel, amidst heightened tensions and anticipated retaliatory actions from Tehran.
This response by the U.S. forces ensues after Iran's threats of retaliation following Israel's airstrikes that killed senior Iranian military commanders.
“U.S. forces in the region continue to shoot down Iranian-launched drones targeting Israel,” a defense official told The Daily Caller. “Our forces remain postured to provide additional defensive support and to protect U.S. forces operating in the region.”
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) also claimed it fired cruise missiles at targets in Israel, an effort that was part of a larger strategy to penetrate Israeli defenses. In response, Israel, supported by the U.S. and other partners, strategized to intercept these threats before they could reach Israeli airspace.
Additionally, Iran's military actions included seizing a civilian vessel, escalating the conflict further. Tehran warned that it would retaliate against U.S. troops if the Biden administration intervened during these attacks.
Iran claims that this response is part of a completed retaliation and said that it will not continue to attack Israel unless further provoked, via its mission to the United Nations.
“Conducted on the strength of Article 51 of the UN Charter pertaining to legitimate defense, Iran’s military action was in response to the Zionist regime’s aggression against our diplomatic premises in Damascus. The matter can be deemed concluded,” the statement read.
“However, should the Israeli regime make another mistake, Iran’s response will be considerably more severe. It is a conflict between Iran and the rogue Israeli regime, from which the U.S. MUST STAY AWAY!,” the statement added.
The situation prompted ongoing high-level briefings for President Biden, who reaffirmed the U.S.'s strong support for Israel's security amidst these developments.
“This attack is likely to unfold over a number of hours. President Biden has been clear: our support for Israel’s security is ironclad,” the White House National Security Council stated.
