A woman was killed in a dog attack Wednesday in Augusta, according to deputies, and one person was arrested.

The victim was identified as Samara Rogers, 21, of Augusta.

Deputies said they arrested Charles David Blackwell, 55, of Augusta, on a charge of involuntary manslaughter.

At 10:29 a.m., the Richmond County Sheriff's Office responded to the 3500 block of Ira Road after a report of a dog attack.

The victim was walking on Ira Road when she was attacked, Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen said.

An autopsy has been scheduled.

At the scene, the attention seemed to be focused on a grayish house. Animal control officers brought out two large dogs - one tan and one white with spots.

Neighbors in the area didn't want to go on camera, but they say there's a history of aggression with the dogs in this area.

It was a dangerous situation that Rogers unfortunately became the victim of.

Although neighbors say the dogs in the area have a history of being aggressive, the Richmond County Sheriff's Office says there's no record of incidents at the home the dogs were taken out of.

It's an isolated incident in Richmond County, but dog attacks are not foreign in the area.

The last fatal dog attack in memory in the CSRA happened on March 22, 2022, in the 3700 block of Columbia Drive in Martinez. Serenity Rose Garnett, who was 7 months old, was killed by a dog while her great-grandmother was watching over her at a home where she rented a room.

Another dog attack in January 2023, also in Columbia County, severely injured Justin Gilstrap, then 11, leading to a long series of surgeries.
