A Dallas Police Department officer was shot and killed on Thursday night, and two others were wounded by a suspect who was later shot dead by law enforcement.

Dallas police responded to an officer in distress at around 10:00 p.m. and found him “shot in a marked squad car,” Fox News reported. Police “exchanged gunfire with a suspect at the scene,” and two other officers were wounded, including one who is in critical condition.

After shooting and killing the police officer, the suspect fled in a vehicle and drove around 30 miles away to Lewisville. Responding officers chased the suspect, and the pursuit ended with the suspect exiting his car with a long gun before he was shot and killed by police officers.

The family of the slain Dallas officer identified him on Friday as 46-year-old Darron Burks, The Dallas Morning News reported. Burks was a former school teacher who had recently graduated from the police academy. The officers who were wounded in the shooting have not yet been named.

“We ask tonight and this morning for the thoughts and prayers of our city, for not only those who are recovering in the hospital but for our fallen, for their family, and for their loved ones, and for us as a department as well,” said Dallas Police spokeswoman Kristin Lowman. She added that “our department is hurting” and “we have officers who are injured who are in the hospital and we lost one of our own.”

Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia simply posted on X, “No words.”

The department said flags at its facilities will fly at half-staff for the fallen officer.

On July 7, 2016, a sniper who sought to gun down white cops killed five officers in Dallas in retaliation for alleged racially biased policing. Since then, eight more Dallas PD officers have been killed in the line of duty.
