Tech billionaire Elon Musk has reportedly donated to a pro-Trump super PAC after previously stating that he would not be backing either candidate in the presidential election.

According to a report from Bloomberg citing people familiar with the matter, Musk recently made a donation to the America PAC. The exact amount donated by Musk is unclear at this time, though sources described it as a “sizable amount.”

The PAC is next required to release information concerning its donors in July 15.

America PAC has been described as “the biggest spender” on voter contacts among outside pro-Trump groups. It has spent $15.8 million so far, with $13.1 million of that going for field operations, federal records show. It has also paid for digital media, texting and phone calls to reach voters.

Musk — a self-styled independent — previously stated that he had no intention of backing either candidate after attending a donor meeting headlined by former President Donald Trump in Palm Beach earlier this year.

Musk, who owns the social media platform X and runs defense contractor SpaceX in addition to Tesla, didn’t endorse Trump in his 2016 or 2020 campaigns.

While speaking with reporters at the DealBook summit in November, Musk declared that he will never vote for President Biden. “I’m not saying I’d vote for Trump,” he said, adding that Nikki Haley, who was vying for the Republican presidential nomination at the time, is a “pro censorship” candidate.

While refusing to explicitly endorse Trump, Musk has emerged as a vocal critic of President Biden and the Democratic Party. He recently branded House Democrats as “traitors” after all but five of them refused to back a bill that would place tighter restrictions on noncitizen voting.
