Chiefs Kicker Harrison Butker responded to attacks from Serena and Venus Williams by pointing out that sports are meant to promote unity.
Serena Williams, flanked by her sister Venus and “Abbot Elementary” creator Quinta Brunson at the ESPN Espy awards, painted Butker as a villain for delivering a speech about Catholic values to Catholic college graduates. The star kicker found himself on the receiving end of flak from the radical left for promoting family values, endorsing traditional gender roles and affirming his Catholic faith.
At the Espy Awards, Venus implored fans to support women’s sports “like you would any other sports, because they are sports.”

“Except you Harrison Butker. We don’t need you,” Serena followed up while glaring into the camera. “At all. Like, ever,” Brunson added.
The joke received applause from the assembled crowd and athletes and sports journalists. Butker — who was in attendance — offered a response a day after the viral moment.
“I thought Mrs. Williams was a great host and applaud her for using her platform to express her beliefs on a variety of topics,” the Kansas City Chiefs kicker told NBC News.
“Sports are supposed to be the great unifier and at an event dedicated to celebrating a diverse group of men and women who have accomplished great feats, she used it as an opportunity to disinvite those with whom she disagrees with from supporting fellow athletes,” he added.
Social media users also defended Butker by pointing to criminal conduct from other NFL stars that received less scrutiny than the kicker’s speech.
“It is continuously so insane that Tyreek Hill strangled the mother of his child, Deshaun Watson has 26 sexual assault allegations, and if you look up ‘nfl domestic violence’ on google rn, there are 2 instances in the past 72 hours,” said Old Row contributor Nick Watts.
“Serena Williams’ father allegedly was a serial cheater who fathered many children out of wedlock, according to one of his own daughters,” added Outkick reporter David Hookstead. “So, naturally, Harrison Butker is the problem. Absolute moron.”
