As the 2024 presidential election countdown commences, Vice President Kamala Harris is stepping up as the nominee for a Democrat vision across the United States. However, with just over 100 days left until voters head to the polls, it remains uncertain if she can succeed in convincing the nation—a challenge Joe Biden also faced during his tenure.

Despite their efforts, polls suggest a growing disillusionment among voters, with a majority applauding Biden’s decision not to run and even suggesting he should step down from his current role immediately. The Democratic Party now faces a steep uphill battle as it attempts to solidify its base and counter the resurgent Republican momentum sparked by Trump’s lead.

A new Rasmussen Reports survey revealed a significant lead for former President Donald Trump in a potential showdown against Vice President Kamala Harris. In the latest poll, Trump decisively captured the support of 50% of likely U.S. voters, with Harris trailing at 43%.

The seven-point advantage for Trump comes in light of Biden’s withdrawal from the race—an exit many attributed to concerns over his mental sharpness. This strikes at a vulnerable time for the Democrats, who are now scrambling to rally around Harris.

The survey also sheds light on national concerns that are shaping the election. A significant portion of the electorate remains wary of potential election fraud, with nearly one in five voters reporting receipt of multiple mail-in ballots in the 2020 elections. Issues like domestic oil and gas production, climate change, and immigration are polarizing voters. For instance, while half of the voters recognize the perils of climate change, a majority still advocates for increased domestic energy production.

The country’s direction itself is under fire, with only 29% of likely U.S. voters feeling that things are headed the right way. This dissatisfaction is mirrored in the lack of trust towards federal government branches and officials, many of whom voters believe are dishonest in their dealings.

Following Biden’s lackluster performance at the CNN debate last month, he officially endorsed Harris, who quickly secured enough delegate endorsements to clinch the Democratic presidential nomination. This compounds the challenges for Democrats as they strive to unify their base and counter the surging momentum of the Republicans, fueled by Trump’s recent nomination at the Republican National Convention. Trump, whose popularity soared to new heights following his survival of an assassination attempt less than two weeks ago, has expressed eagerness to debate Harris.

Despite this, he has not yet committed to any debates. Harris, on the other hand, has remained non-committal about participating in a proposed debate hosted by Fox News. Before exiting the race, Biden had positioned Harris to potentially face Trump’s running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance, in future debates. Democratic delegates are expected to confirm Harris as their party’s official nominee via a virtual vote by August 7. Meanwhile, the political landscape continues to evolve rapidly as both parties gear up for a contentious electoral season.

With Harris now at the helm of the Democratic ticket, the pressure mounts not only to unite a fragmented party but also to restore faith in a government beleaguered by accusations of mismanagement.
