In the aftermath of FBI Director Christopher Wray’s testimony before the House Judiciary Committee, former President Donald Trump, along with prominent Republicans, are calling for Wray’s immediate resignation. The controversy stems from Wray’s comments suggesting that Trump may not have been directly hit by a bullet in the recent assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania.

Christopher Wray, appointed by Trump in 2017, faced ridicule as he discussed the FBI’s ongoing investigation into the incident. However, his remarks did not sit well with the former president and his allies, who have accused Wray of being dishonest and unfit for his role as the head of the nation’s primary investigative agency.

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) expressed his longstanding doubts about Wray’s capabilities in a Fox News interview on Friday. “I’ve always said Wray should resign long before he answered that question in Judiciary Committee yesterday,” Comer said vehemently. “Look, if Christopher Wray is head of the FBI and he was telling the truth that he didn’t notice anything wrong with Joe Biden then he’s not much of an investigator and he shouldn’t be leading our chief investigative agency in America.”

“But more than likely he was lying to Congress. I don’t think that’s the first time I’ve had to deal with Christopher Ray over the past year and a half and dealt with his obstruction and the dirty tricks that the FBI has played all along the way,” Comer added.

The calls for Wray’s resignation represent an escalation in the ongoing tension between Trump’s camp and the Department of Justice. On Wednesday, Trump blasted Wray, demanding his resignation over accusations of misleading Congress regarding Biden’s mental fitness. Trump wrote, “If that is the case, Director Wray should resign immediately from the FBI, and stop “sweet talking” Congress every time he goes up, which he loves to do, because anybody can see that Joe Biden is cognitively and physically challenged, and if you can’t see that, you sure as hell can’t be running the FBI – Unless, that is, you want to illegally lead the Raid on Mar-a-Lago. Wray has to resign, and NOW, for LYING TO CONGRESS!”

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) also expressed his doubts about Wray’s testimony, stating, “I didn’t find Wray’s testimony credible. We’ve all seen the video, we’ve seen the analysis, we’ve heard it from multiple sources in different angles that a bullet went through his ear. I’m not sure it matters that much,” Johnson said. He criticized Wray for withholding information, noting, “He was not forthcoming with some of the information that we would expect.” Johnson also voiced his concerns about federal leadership, adding, “There’s a lot of frustration and concern about the leadership with these agencies,” an apparent nod to issues within the Secret Service as well.

Steven Cheung, a spokesman for Trump’s campaign, sharply criticized Wray, stating, “Anyone who believes this conspiracy bullsh*t is either mentally deficient or willfully peddling falsehoods for political reasons.” The FBI issued a clarifying statement on Thursday, asserting, “Since the day of the attack, the FBI has been consistent and clear that the shooting was an attempted assassination of former President Trump which resulted in his injury, as well as the death of a heroic father and the injuries of several other victims.”

The statement further detailed, “The FBI’s Shooting Reconstruction Team continues to examine evidence from the scene, including bullet fragments, and the investigation remains ongoing.”
