History is laden with attempts by politicians to be relatable that have fallen flat, but Vice President Kamala Harris may have outdone all others this year with a cringy Southern accent that is being mocked online following her speech at an Atlanta rally.

The veep, a native of Oakland, California, dropped her r’s as she addressed a friendly crowd of 10,000 in Georgia’s capital city Tuesday night, generating a wave of criticism about her appropriation of the Southern twang to appeal for votes. Fox News highlighted some of the scorn she’s receiving online after video showed the Democratic leader changing up her speech pattern.

“You helped us win in 2020 and we gonna do it again in 2024!” she yelled as the crowd roared. “Kamala is a Jamaican/Indian from San Francisco. She is not from the south as this fake attempt to randomly develop a southern accent clearly shows. Thanks for the laugh Kamala,” one anti-Harris user on X wrote.

“Kamala Harris went to speak in Atlanta and now has a southern accent,” OutKick founder Clay Travis said on X, sharing a similar clip. “Why do people do this? It’s just so transparently fake.” His followers seemed to agree. “No one goes to Massachusetts and suddenly talks like a Kennedy. It’s only the South,” one wrote in response. “It’s also usually to black southern voters,” said another.

“It’s what sociopaths do,” one reply said.

“It’s called mirroring and it is a strong narcissistic tendency,” another user said.

Conservative columnist Ian Haworth reminded his followers that Hillary Clinton over the years has made her own failed attempts at a Southern accent since moving from New York to live in Arkansas during Bill Clinton’s time as governor. Harris’s attempt at a “fake southern accent puts Hillary Clinton to shame,” he wrote.

Historically speaking, Harris has stiff competition if she wants to vie to be among the cringiest U.S. politicians in modern history. During his 2004 campaign for president, Massachusetts-born John Kerry was photographed in full camouflage on a deer hunt in Ohio. Mitt Romney, who was worth $200 million at the time of his 2012 presidential run, garnered a wave of groans when he told a televised audience that he was often worked up about “getting the pink slip” at work. Former President Barack Obama bowled for a paltry score of 37 while working the lanes in Pennsylvania during 2008, and former President George H.W. Bush did his best to eschew his pampered New England upbringing during the 1992 campaign, strapping on cowboy boots in Texas and expressing amazement at the new cash register technologies in grocery stores.
