Critics of Vice President Kamala Harris are reaching deep into her past, unearthing evidence that she was showered with prominent, well-paid positions and a luxury BMW car as part of her relationship with the much older Willie Brown, according to an exposé by the New York Post.

Harris, who previously served as California’s attorney general, rose the prosecutorial ranks while dating Brown, a powerbroker in the state’s Democratic circles who served as Speaker for the state assembly from 1980 to 1995. The two met in 1994 when she was just 29 and he was 60, jumpstarting her career as Brown secured her trips to Paris and exclusive access to the Oscars. Her rapid ascent up the ranks vis-à-vis her relationship with Brown is chronicled in the 2021 book “Kamala’s Way: An American Life” by journalist Dean Morain. “Over the course of the relationship, Brown gave Harris a BMW, she traveled with him to Paris, attended the Academy Awards,” Morain wrote, including an item about Brown once taking her to Boston where they met with one Donald J. Trump.

Early 90’s news clips obtained by Morain describe the power couple as “the speaker’s new steady,” according to the San Francisco Chronicle, while the Los Angeles Times called Harris Brown’s “frequent companion.” Shortly before he ended his career as speaker, Brown in 1994 appointed Harris to the California Medical Assistance Commission, earning her a $72,000 annual salary that at the time was worth more than $150,000 in today’s dollars. She also received media attention as part of the commission’s monthly public meetings.

Brown, now 90 years old, hasn’t been shy about claiming credit for positioning Harris over the years into roles that ultimately propelled her to the precipice of the Oval Office. In 2019, the former San Francisco mayor admitted the two had a fling. “Yes, I may have influenced her career by appointing her to two state commissions when I was Assembly speaker. And I certainly helped with her first race for district attorney in San Francisco,” he added.

Harris reached the San Francisco DA’s office in 2003, using it as a stepping stone to reach the state AG’s office seven years later. She was reelected in 2014 before winning a seat in the U.S. Senate in 2017. She ran for president two years later and drew scorn from then-candidate Joe Biden for accusing him of racism during a bipartisan crackdown on criminals in the 90s. However, the future president ultimately picked Harris as his running mate and last week turned the top of the ticket over to her after facing tremendous pressure to bow out.

President Trump’s campaign has struggled to find consensus on an angle of attack against Harris, the first Black woman to lead a major party’s presidential ticket. She can lean on a hardscrabble upbringing, raised in a household with meager savings and as a child endured a lengthy custody battle between her mother and father. Former classmates remember the future veep as “spunky” and ” super-cool,” the outlet added, with one saying she refrained from dating while in high school.
