A resurfaced video from the Daily Mail is going viral on social media. In the clip, Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, donned a hijab during a visit to the Hayes Muslim Centre in West London.

The video captured not just Kate’s attire but also a controversial incident where a Muslim man declined to shake her hand, citing religious reasons that forbid him from touching a woman who is not his wife.

The visit by Kate and her husband, Prince William, was part of their engagement with communities involved in raising funds for the devastating earthquakes that struck Turkey and Syria in early 2023. The Princess’s choice to wear a hijab was seen as a nod to cultural sensitivity, aligning with royal protocols that often encourage attire respectful of the host community’s customs.

However, the refusal of a handshake was seen as a snub by many that disrespected the Princess and symbolic rejection of Western figures and values.

The assimilation of Middle Eastern culture in England has presented challenges to say the least. Middleton has worn headscarves during several notable past visits. In 2012, she chose a light blue scarf for a mosque visit in Malaysia, and she showcased a variety of headscarves throughout her 2019 tour of Pakistan.

Tensions have escalated recently in Britain and other regions following the violent spree by Hamas gunmen in Israeli towns and Israel’s subsequent attack in Gaza. This sparked pro-Palestinian demonstrations and solidarity vigils by Jewish groups for hostages, including some British nationals, who were captured by the militants.
