On Monday, Joy Reid launched a passionate diatribe against Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, accusing the Justice of harboring intentions to transform the United States into a “Christian nationalist ethno-state.” Recently Justice Alito has faced backlash over a series of reported incidents, which Democrats have used to question his integrity.

Last year, ProPublica reported that Alito participated in a fishing trip to Alaska, hosted by billionaire Paul Singer, who later had business before the Supreme Court. Despite allegations, Alito did not recuse himself from the related cases, adhering to his judgment that no conflict of interest existed.

Additionally, more controversy arose when The New York Times reported that an upside-down American flag was seen at Alito's residence just days before Joe Biden's inauguration—a signal often interpreted as a sign of distress or protest. Justice Alito clarified that the placement of the flag was inadvertently done by his wife, Martha-Ann Alito, and was not intended as a political statement.

“It feels like Alito is unconstrained at this point. He doesn't care who knows that he wants to make the country into a Christian nationalist ethno-state, or whatever it is he thinks that he would create under this handmade-sale vision. He doesn't care if people know that he takes lavish vacations. He and Roberts don't care. And the right doesn't care,” Reid claimed. “They care more about Ketanji Brown-Jackson getting Beyonce tickets than they do about Clarence Thomas getting four million dollars.”

Last week, Reid clashed with Florida Representative Byron Donalds (R-FL) over his comments on the Jim Crow era. During a discussion on MSNBC, Donalds said that his words were misconstrued by Reid, explaining that his mentioning of the era was solely to highlight historical marriage rates among Black Americans, not to romanticize the period.

“The overarching issue is talking just about Black families and why you’re seeing a trend of Black people leaning towards Republicans in this election cycle, and probably in election cycles to come,” he said during the program with Reid. “The stuff that comes up about Jim Crow and twisting my words saying I was being nostalgic or Jim Crow was good for Black people, that’s all political spin. It’s a lie. It’s gaslighting and that’s truly unfortunate,” Donalds said.

Reid has faced significant backlash for several controversial comments and actions over the years. In 2020, Reid compared the radicalization of Trump supporters to that of Muslim terrorists, which sparked outrage and accusations of Islamophobia.

Reid was also criticized from both sides of the political aisle for remarks that seemed to downplay the response to attacks on American soldiers in Baghdad. Critics, including prominent figures like Donald Trump Jr. and Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) , condemned her remarks as inappropriate and unpatriotic.
