Watergate prosecutor: Biden should grant preemptive pardons to Jack Smith — and himself

by WorldTribune Staff, December 2, 2024 Real World News

One of the prosecutors during the Watergate scandal said she is “thrilled” that Joe Biden pardoned his son Hunter Biden, but said the elder Biden should go much further and grant preemptive pardons to pretty much everyone involved in the lawfare targeting of President-elect Donald Trump.

Joe Biden’s pardon of son Hunter covers nearly a full decade, from Jan. 1, 2014 to the present.

Jill Wine-Banks said Sunday on MSNBC’s “Prime”: “I’m relieved and thrilled that he did it, this was one of the cases that called out clemency. Hunter Biden first of all would not ever be prosecuted for the gun crime, but for his last name. Second of all, he was addicted and that was a cause of his actions, he has now been sober for many years and this is a time when it is really appropriate for a grant of clemency.”

She added: “I also hope that President Biden will also issue preemptive pardons to all of those people threatened by the injustice of what will become the Department of Justice in the Trump administration. That includes Jack Smith and all of his staff, many Department of Justice lawyers, it includes President Biden himself, although we don’t know that anyone can legally pardon themselves. He will need a pardon because he is going to be harassed and charged for no crimes whatsoever. Donald Trump has promised that.”

The National Pulse’s Raheem Kassam said Trump could turn the Hunter Biden pardon into a win for the MAGA movement.

“By breaking the seal on controversial pardons, it provides Trump with a pathway to do the same — on a far grander scale. Far from a setback, this could energize the MAGA movement and solidify Trump’s image as a disruptor of the D.C. establishment,” Kassam wrote in a Dec. 2 analysis.

“Hunter Biden’s pardon has now set a new political precedent that Trump could use to justify issuing sweeping and bold pardons of his own — including the January 6 defendants and even himself,” Kassam wrote.

“Indeed Hunter’s pardon shatters any remaining veneer of political impartiality in the Justice Department and the Biden government. It renders the Democrats’ faux moral high ground on accountability completely untenable. If President Biden uses his executive power to shield his own son from legal consequences, it would be virtually impossible for Democrats to attack Trump for exercising the same authority — especially when Trump’s pardons would address what many rightly view as politically motivated prosecutions.

“Biden pardons his family members to help save his own skin, while Trump pardons his supporters, once again putting into practice one of his longest-standing mantras: ‘They’re not after me, they’re after you. I just happen to be standing in their way.’ ”
