White House: Patience ‘running out’ for Venezuela government to produce valid election results

The White House is putting pressure on Venezuela's authoritarian leader Nicolas Maduro to release valid election results to back up his claim that he won the presidential election.

The Maduro-run government has not produced valid precinct-by-precinct data of the election results.

The country's election authority, the Venezuela National Election Commission, announced that Maduro won with 51% of the vote but did not share data to support that figure.

“Our patience, and that of the international community, is running out, running out. I’m waiting for the Venezuelan electoral [authority] to come clean and release the full detailed data on this election so that everyone can see the results,” National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said on Wednesday at a briefing.

The Carter Center, an independent election observer, said in a statement that Venezuela’s 2024 presidential election did not "meet international standards of electoral integrity and cannot be considered democratic."

Edmundo González, the opposition candidate, said he won the election and that the official data will support his argument.
