Congressman Ronny Jackson, a Texas Republican who also formerly served as the White House physician to former Presidents Donald Trump and Barack Obama during their tenures in office, stated on Friday that Trump was indeed wounded by a bullet to his right ear when 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire on him and the crowd attending a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

The Texas congressman posted part of a memorandum he wrote addressed to “concerned citizens of the United States” announcing he has been monitoring the former president’s health following the attempt made on his life. “The would-be assassin fired multiple rounds from a relatively close distance using a high-powered rifle, with one bullet striking the former president, and now the Republican nominee for president, in his right ear,” Jackson stated in the memorandum.

“There is absolutely no evidence that it was anything other than a bullet,” Jackson added. He said that Trump is “rapidly recovering” from the wound and doing “extremely well.” The memo from the Texas congressman seems to have been inspired by comments that Christopher Wray, director of the FBI, made while he was delivering testimony in front of the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday. During the hearing, Wray said that there were still some questions regarding whether the former president was struck in the ear by a bullet or a piece of shrapnel.

“With respect to former President Trump, there is some question about whether it was a bullet or shrapnel that hit his ear,” he said during his testimony before the Judiciary Committee. Trump then fired back at Wray for the comments he made, stating in a post on social media that the general public in America does not have much confidence in anything the FBI has to say at this point in our nation’s history. He then said that Wray should step down as director of the bureau because he allegedly lied to Congress concerning the health of President Joe Biden.

“There was no glass, there was no shrapnel. The hospital called it a ‘bullet wound to the ear,’ and that is what it was,” the former president said on social media. Trump picked Wray to head up the bureau back in 2017 after he fired then-Director James Comey.

The FBI issued a statement on Thursday said Wray gave “extensive congressional testimony” concerning the agency’s investigation into the attempt on Trump’s life that left several attendees injured and one dead.

“Since the day of the attack, the FBI has been consistent and clear that the shooting was an attempted assassination of former President Trump which resulted in his injury, as well as the death of a heroic father and the injuries of several other victims,” the FBI stated concerning the assassination attempt. The FBI also revealed they put together a “shooting reconstruction team” and is looking into evidence they have gathered from the scene of the attempted assassination, which includes bullet fragments.

Jackson made a reference to Wray’s comments, stating in the memo that Congress needs to correct the record from the hearing “as confirmed by both the hospital and myself.” Jackson, who represents the 13th Congressional District in Texas, was first elected to Congress during the 2020 election cycle.
