China's 'real-life dollhouse' neighbourhood filled with tiny apartments that resemble children's toys

There is a neighbourhood in China that looks like a 'real-life dollhouse' made up of small apartments that resemble kid's toys.

In a viral video on social media, influencer Christian Nemeth, 26, filmed the open plan apartment complex in Chengdu, Sichuan province while exploring the country after moving from Nevada in the US.

His footage shows the futuristic 'real-life dollhouse' neighbourhood in China - made up of more than 1,300 tiny homes.

The building, named the Manhattan Nature, was built between 2000 and 2009 and apartments run from 500 sqft to 2,200 sqft.

The units, designed for single occupancy, are miniature sets closely stacked together, making the homes feel like small houses for dolls.

Christian asked a resident if he could tour their apartment and was granted access, giving rare insight into these unique homes.

Christian said: 'I was genuinely surprised at how tiny the apartments were; it's striking to see how much has been compacted into such small spaces.

'It's a mix of curiosity and disbelief.

'I was able to view them from the apartments across as well as up close, it was truly a remarkable thing to witness.

'From what I observed, most apartments were unoccupied at the time I visited, though a few windows showed glimpses of daily life.'

The complex is not only made up of homes, but also hosts businesses such as art studios, nail salons and barbershops.

It occupies an area of about 16,667 square meters, with a plot ratio of 4.0 and a building density of 35%, according to Parametric Architecture.

It also has a large number of around 377 parking spaces and a generous greening rate of roughly 30.5 percent.

The neighbourhood was developed by Chengdu Helda Real Estate Development Co., Ltd, who said the dollhouse-like appearance is intentional.

Their design strategy was focused on maximising the overall aesthetic, focusing on lighting and ventilation.

Manhattan Nature's unique style has attracted many visitors and architecture enthusiasts from abroad, including TikTok travel blogger @jimmyvisitsworld who told Newsweek that he discovered it when searching for things to do in the area.

Jimmy described the neighbourhood as a 'toylike world' in his own viral video, adding: 'The open design floods every apartment with sunlight and fresh air, making it feel like something out of a dream.'

The popularity of the housing complex comes as tourism in China has been slowly rising since the covid-19 pandemic.

It was confirmed earlier this week that UK nationals are now able to travel visa-free to mainland China from February 17.

British travellers can visit the country for up to 30 days without the need for extra documentation.

The new regulation will apply to tourism, business and visiting family and friends. It is set to initially only be in effect until December 31.
