It’s OVER For Omar (Which Is Not Her Real Name)

Federal court filings now list Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar as "Ilhan Nur Said Elmi," the same distinctive name that appears on a newly obtained UK marriage certificate for her sister and that matches the man she legally married in 2009. The records revive long-standing allegations that the marriage was a sham arrangement with her own brother to secure immigration benefits.

President Trump has called for her immediate resignation, while U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro has confirmed the name used in the filing. The same congresswoman who has spent years denouncing American institutions now faces the prospect that her own identity documents and marital history may not hold up under scrutiny.

A motion submitted by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia refers to the congresswoman as "Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar." The filing concerns efforts to keep sealed materials related to a search warrant executed at her Washington, D.C. residence. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro stated on air that "Her real name is Ilhan Nur Sayed Elmi."

Omar's office maintains that "This is completely false. Ilhan Omar is her real name."

The New York Post obtained a 1997 UK marriage certificate for Leila Nur Said. The document lists the father as Nur Said Elmi, described as a military officer from Somalia. Omar's late father, Nur Omar Mohamed, was also known by the name Nur Said Elmi.

After his death from COVID complications in 2020, tributes on social media addressed "Nur Said Elmi" and referenced both Omar and Leila. Sources familiar with the family background told the Post they believe the name on the British certificate is the same individual. Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, the British citizen Omar married in Minnesota in 2009, shares the middle and surname.

Omar has repeatedly denied that the 2009 marriage was entered into for immigration purposes or that Elmi is her brother. In a recent interview with MS NOW's Chris Hayes, she was asked whether she is related to her former husband. She replied, "Not to my knowledge."

She attributed the allegation to a Somali blog and said claims that she had introduced Elmi as her brother were "insane." In a 2016 statement she had called the same allegation "absurd and offensive."

The couple divorced in 2017. Elmi applied for a marriage-based green card and later withdrew the application after U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services requested additional evidence about the validity of the marriage. While still legally married to Elmi, Omar filed joint tax returns with Ahmed Hirsi, the father of her three children, in 2014 and 2015.

Homeland Security Investigations agents searched Omar's D.C. home on October 12 under a court-authorized warrant. Agents were photographed carrying boxes marked "Seized Property Evidence."

Reporting indicates investigators have obtained DNA evidence as part of the probe into whether the marriage involved a biological sibling and whether false statements were made on immigration paperwork.

The investigation also examines age representations connected to her father's naturalization. No charges have been filed. Omar has described the search as an attempt to intimidate.

President Trump addressed the name discrepancy at a rally, stating that "her name is not Ilhan Omar, the one that she used to get elected and sworn into Congress" and that "She used a fake name to be sworn in. I assume she must immediately have to resign from Congress."

Legal analyst Jonathan Turley has observed that if an elected official filed documents or took the oath under false pretenses regarding identity, that can create separate exposure under federal election law and false-statement statutes. House forms, FEC filings, and the oath of office all require accurate representations of name and identity.

The timeline is not complicated. Omar arrived in the United States as a refugee in 1995. She applied for a marriage license with Hirsi in 2002 that was never finalized. She legally married Elmi in 2009. She reconciled with Hirsi, had a third child with him, and only obtained a legal divorce from Elmi in 2017 before marrying Hirsi the following year.

Community accounts from the period, including those reported by the Daily Mail, described Elmi living in the same orbit and being introduced in ways that raised questions among Somali residents in Minneapolis. Those accounts have never been definitively resolved in public records.

Denaturalization and removal from office are not political slogans. They are legal processes that require evidence of fraud in the acquisition of citizenship or in the qualifications for holding office.

The combination of the court filing, the sister's marriage certificate, the reported DNA material, and the green-card application that was withdrawn after scrutiny supplies a concrete basis for that process to continue.

Every other naturalized citizen and every other member of Congress is expected to clear the same standards. The documents now public make continued official silence difficult to sustain.
