politics and put France Unbowed (LFI) under fresh scrutiny.
Deranque died Saturday, two days after prosecutors say he was attacked on the sidelines of a protest outside Lyon’s Institute of Political Studies, according to TF1 Info. Prosecutor Thierry Dran said Deranque was “kicked and punched” by “at least six” assailants and that an autopsy found fatal injuries to his skull and brain. The violence followed a demonstration by the anti-immigration feminist collective Némésis against a university conference by far-left European Parliament member Rima Hassan, according to Reuters.
One of the detainees is Jacques-Elie Favrot, identified in reporting as a parliamentary assistant tied to LFI lawmaker Raphaël Arnault. French outlet LCP reported Favrot said, through his lawyer, that he was stepping back from his duties during the investigation and denied responsibility for Deranque’s death.
The arrests also revived focus on La Jeune Garde, a dissolved far-left “antifascist” group that has been publicly linked to the case in French political debate and press coverage.
President Emmanuel Macron condemned the killing and urged calm, writing on X that Deranque had been the victim of “an unprecedented outburst of violence,” adding: “Hatred that kills has no place in our country.”
LFI leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon denied any party role, saying, “We express our consternation, but also our empathy and compassion for [Deranque’s] family and friends. We have said dozens of times that we oppose all forms of violence,” according to RTL.
