Texas governor Greg Abbott has issued a warning for Republicans that the outcome of the Lone Star state's heated Senate race could lead to a disaster in 2028.
Speaking to conservative radio host Sean Hannity earlier this week, Abbott said: 'If we lose Texas, there's no chance ever for the future of the United States.'
Recent polling has shown Democratic hopeful running neck-and-neck with, and at times pulling ahead of, Trump-backed Republican Ken Paxton. A Texas Public Opinion Research poll conducted last week put Talarico four points ahead, at 51 percent to Paxton's 47 percent.
'We've got to realize what's at stake here,' Abbott added. 'And if anybody stays home and doesn't go vote, it's going to put Texas at risk. It's going to put the United States at risk.'
The governor and Hannity agreed that if Texas were to flip blue, Republicans would face near-impossible odds of winning the White House ticket in 2028.
'If Texas ever goes blue, they know they will have a stranglehold on the Electoral College and presidential elections,' Hannity explained.
As Talarico looks increasingly likely to become the first Democrat to win a statewide race in deep-red Texas in 32 years, Paxton's bid for federal office has been riddled with scandals.

In May, the Daily Mail exclusively revealed that the Texas Attorney General has been shacking up with his mistress just miles from the home where his wife of 40 years still lives.
The 63-year-old quietly moved into a $2.1 million love nest with Christian influencer Tracy Duhon, 58.
His wife, Angela Paxton, filed for divorce last year on 'Biblical grounds.'
The married Republican was also accused of lunging at a man and trying to snatch his phone after being filmed with his mistress in London.
The incident occurred just days after the Daily Mail first reported the two being spotted together in Iceland.
Earlier this month, Paxton was also seen on video allegedly partying in Dubai with two American businessmen who were indicted on federal healthcare fraud charges.

'I'm Thomas J Henry. I'm here to announce my support for James Talarico for United States Senator from Texas,' he said in the clip.
He captioned the post, writing that he found his approach 'balanced' and 'honest' and adding that 'I don't put my name behind just anyone.'
Governor Abbott himself is also in the midst of a re-election bid, as he is looking to stave off an upset from Austin Democratic candidate Gina Hinojosa. Abbott holds a 3% lead over Democrat Gina Hinojosa in the latest Texas Public Opinion Research poll.
In the conversation with Hannity, he claimed that there are still more Republicans in the Lone Star state than Democrats but stressed it was crucial they actually make it to the polls and cast their ballot.
'If, however, they stay home, it'll be a very tough night on election night,' he said and demanded people to 'walk, bike or drive' to an election booth.
'If all Republicans will go vote, we're going to win this race,' Abbott said.
