No time to die: Slow Horses' Jack Lowden bounces back after being left for dead in spy drama - but is that proof the Bond hopeful isn't the new 007?

James Bond has always had an enviable knack for escaping death – although he'll have to rise from the grave for his next outing, after Daniel Craig's luck ran out in No Time To Die.

And it seems Slow Horses' River Cartwright, played by Bond hopeful Jack Lowden, is proving he too can bounce back after being left for dead in the Apple TV spy drama's sensational finale.

Apparently poisoned by Russian assassins in the closing scenes of series six, River looks to have made a miraculous return.

Exclusive footage obtained by The Mail on Sunday shows Lowden, 36, back in action filming the eighth series in east London.

Series seven, it should be noted, is already complete and in the can.

Could this be a glimpse of Lowden's fate – that he's set to continue as Cartwright and lose out on the 007 role?

Or is the Scottish actor just honing the skills he may need for Bond's MI6?

In the scenes, Lowden cuts a Bond-like figure as he makes his way across rooftops.

The footage, in which he appears alongside co-star Olivia Cooke, was filmed just a week after the latest series finale was shown.

In the closing scenes, Cartwright collapsed after coming into contact with a nerve agent left behind by Russian assassins. In a major cliffhanger, viewers were left wondering if he had survived.

Lowden, who is married to actress Saoirse Ronan, is among the hopefuls tipped to play Bond in the next film, to be made by Amazon MGM studios.

Others include Dua Lipa's husband Callum Turner and The Crown's Josh O'Connor.

The race has reportedly reached a crucial stage, with screen tests taking place at Bray Studios in Berkshire last weekend.

Slow Horses star Gary Oldman has backed Lowden for the role, saying: 'Jack is young, he's masculine, he's incredibly funny, which I think is important.'

But there may be a complication: the MoS has reported on a tussle between Amazon and Apple TV over Lowden, with both firms keen to secure his services.

An insider said: 'You can't have two spies but just one face. Amazon wants its Bond but Apple already has its spy.'
