A paedophile teacher who abused former Australian of the Year Grace Tame will not face trial on charges he harassed his former student on social media after a judge ruled he was unfit due to mental impairment.

Nicolaas Ockert Bester, a former teacher at Hobart private schools, was convicted of sexually abusing Ms Tame when she was his student in 2011.

The Reserve Bank has just made a huge mistake - and you're being punished for it: What they need to do before it's too late

Interest rate hikes hitting mortgage holders may be based on flawed inflation data, with a leading international economist accusing the Reserve Bank of Australia of misreading the true cause of rising prices.

Canadian labour economist Jim Stanford said Australia's economic conditions do not justify further rate hikes, arguing the Reserve Bank is repeating mistakes made during the first wave of post-pandemic inflation by relying too heavily on higher interest rates.

It's a little before 5am and the impact of the first Russian ballistic missile of the night resounds along the Dnieper River below my hotel window. Cruise missiles and Shahed drones will arrive before breakfast is served.

In the room next door, a soldier on leave and his girlfriend are engaged in unabashedly noisy lovemaking – as if there will be no tomorrow, as well there might not. Death is always in the shadows here, if not waiting up the road, particularly if you're in uniform.

Punch, a six-month-old Japanese macaque monkey with enormous round eyes, long spindly arms and an adorable potbelly, has no idea that outside the four walls of his enclosure he’s a global celebrity.

On February 5, Ichikawa City Zoo – 20 miles outside Tokyo – posted a picture online of Punch clinging desperately to an orangutan soft toy from Ikea alongside a heartbreaking caption that revealed the infant had been abandoned by his mother.

It seemed like the flat-share of my dreams. Just 30 minutes from work, only £850 a month (bills included) and in chi-chi Hampstead, north London, with its bars and restaurants and the glorious heath a stone’s throw away.

I snapped the letting agent’s hand off and moved in last summer.
