A far-left extremist who was already on France's fiche S security watchlist has been arrested for the Saturday arson of the Limoges City Hall. He was detained by RAID officers and anti-terrorism investigators are also looking into the case. The attack, authorities say, was a coordinated effort from the far-left.
Those who attacked the building brought mortars, a 200-kilogram battering ram, and waved Palestinian flags. They also flew flags of Antifa and the far-left New Anticapitalist Party. Limoges Mayor Guillaume Guérin said that hundreds of far-left militants had joined the demonstration that was already 5,000 strong and deliberately targeted the structure.
"The ultra-left organized the logistics. They had prepared their attack and knew how to get inside," Guerin said. Workers who were inside at the time of the attack were threatened with death, the mayor said, per The Hungarian Conservative.
The 40-year-old suspect was arrested on Tuesday at about 6:15 am in Val-d'Issoire about 50 km, or 31 miles, from Limoges. He was known to police prior to this attack and his arrest, but authorities did not initially release his name. 54 far-left and Muslim groups have been identified as taking part in organizing and backing the violence.
An X account identified him, but this outlet has not confirmed the report.

In an interview on Monday, Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin said that the National Anti-Terrorist Prosecutor's Office was observing the investigation and may take over. Darmanin further said that the fire was likely an organized terror attack based on far-left ideology. These far-left groups sought to attack buildings that were symbols of pride for the French Republic.

While Darmanin said that the far-left groups had infiltrated the protests, a report from Fox News Digital's Asra Nomani shows that there were 54 groups organizing and supporting the protests, demonstrations, and riots in France after education protests began in September. She details the groups that she has uncovered to "pierce" the "myth of 'student protests.'" Numerous Antifa groups are on her list.

The 143-year-old Limoges City Hall, which stood through two World Wars, was filled with art and artifacts. It has been a source of pride in French heritage and the Republic. The roof collapsed, as did the 43-meter bell tower. The interior is essentially ruined with fire, smoke, and water damage.
Other acts of destruction over the weekend included the storming of French conservative media outlets CNews, Europe 1, and Le Journal du Dimanche. A statue of Marianne, the symbol of the French Republic, was also torn down.
