ROOKE: Spanberger’s Speech Was No Nothingburger — It Was Actively Bad For Her Party

ROOKE: Spanberger’s Speech Was No Nothingburger — It Was Actively Bad For Her Party

The stark difference between the Republican and Democratic visions for America was on full display Tuesday.

President Donald Trump gave arguably his best State of the Union address Tuesday night. Shortly after, Democratic Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger gave the Democrats’ rebuttal, and it was a perfect primer for why Trump and Republicans swept the 2024 election.

Trump’s address resonated with a weary nation hungry for leadership, outlining a vision of renewed American strength amid economic recovery and border security. He gave us an optimistic and fun view of what the future would look like under his leadership.

“When the world needs courage, daring, vision and inspiration, it is still turning to America. And when God needs a nation to work his miracles, He knows exactly who to ask,” Trump said.

Spanberger offered the opposite. She was tasked with delivering her party’s rebuttal to Trump, but instead it became a masterclass in political miscalculation. Her speech unintentionally reinforced the narrative that the Democratic Party is disconnected from everyday Americans. Spanberger quickly veered into criticism.

“While the president paints a rosy picture, too many Americans are left behind,” she said, echoing familiar Democratic attempts to control the affordability narrative. (Sign up for Mary Rooke’s weekly newsletter here!)

Worse, Spanberger’s tone dripped with condescension throughout her speech, playing into the caricature of radical left women lecturing the nation about racism, xenophobia, and inequality; a message Americans wholeheartedly rejected in 2024.

She framed Trump’s immigration policies as divisive, hateful, and un-American. Spanberger attacked Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, calling them “poorly trained” and even dropping what is likely to be a new Democratic nickname for illegal immigrants: “people who aspire to be Americans.”

“Our president has sent poorly trained federal agents into our cities, where they have arrested and detained American citizens and people who aspire to be Americans. And they have done it without a warrant,” Spanberger said.

“They have ripped nursing mothers away from their babies, they have sent children — a little boy in a blue bunny hat — to far-off detention centers. And they have killed American citizens on our streets. And they have done it all with their faces masked from accountability,” she continued.

“Every minute spent sowing fear is a minute not spent investigating murders, crimes against children, or the criminals defrauding seniors of their life savings. Our president told us tonight that we are safer because these agents arrest mothers and detain children. Think about that. Our broken immigration system is something to be fixed, not an excuse for unaccountable agents to terrorize our communities,” Spanberger added.

There are almost too many falsehoods to denounce. Without going into the warrant lies or the claims that ICE agents terrorize communities, the most shocking statement is her denouncing the use of masks by federal agents during immigration raids. These agents are doxxed, attacked, and demonized to such a degree by the left that they and their families are in constant danger for simply doing their job.

Her attacks are compounded by the Democrats’ visible refusal to stand for protecting citizens over criminal illegal immigrants during Trump’s address.

“If you agree with this statement, then stand up and show your support: The first duty of the American government is to protect American citizens, not illegal aliens,” Trump said, challenging Congress, but mainly Democrats, to stand.

Not a single Democrat stood in support of Americans. And in their rebuttal, Spanberger furthered the narrative that the Democratic party supports open borders, illegal immigrants, and the fatal effects of these policies over the safety and prosperity of American citizens.

The night exposed the chasm between Republican resolve and Democratic detachment. It was a gamble for Trump to challenge Democrats. If they had stood, it would have shown that, while their policies are radical, they at least still believe Americans come first. But their refusal and Spanberger’s choice to double down on the demonization of Trump’s immigration policies solidified that Americans cannot trust Democrats to hold their interests above all else.

If Spanberger’s speech is the best rebuttal Democrats can muster, it’s a sign of deeper rot within the party. Voters were shown that the party claiming to be on their side is merely speaking out of both sides of its mouth. The only policy they truly care about is being anti-Trump. While this may play to the most radical members of their base, regular Americans crave a future filled with optimism and prosperity. Trump’s address was arguably his finest hour, while Spanberger’s response served as a damning indictment of a party unable to meet the moment. She had the perfect opportunity to show Americans that Democrats have a positive vision for the future. She won her race promising affordability, but has spent her first months in office raising taxes and increasing regulations. They could have gotten away with it had Spanberger possessed even an ounce of charisma. However, the poor lighting and her lecturing tone showcased that Democrats’ vision for America is bleak.
