Rep. Lauren Boebert's 21-year-old son has been arrested in Colorado and is facing multiple felony charges involving the alleged sexual exploitation of a minor.
Tyler Jay Boebert, the Republican congresswoman's oldest son, was taken into custody Sunday by the Garfield County Sheriff's Office after a warrant was issued in connection with an investigation dating back more than two years.
Court records show Boebert is facing five felony counts, including three charges of sexual exploitation of a child and two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. The allegations center on sexually explicit material involving Boebert and a girl who was under the age of 18 at the time.
According to court records, investigators allege Boebert recorded a video depicting himself having sexual intercourse with the minor and later shared the recording. Boebert was reportedly 18 years old at the time of the alleged incident, while the girl was 17.
The case reportedly began after authorities received information through Colorado's Safe2Tell program in 2024. The subsequent investigation focused on explicit videos allegedly shared through social media and eventually resulted in the charges filed against Boebert.
The charges include allegations involving inducing or enticing a child to participate in sexually exploitative material, possessing sexually exploitative material with the intent to distribute it and sexual exploitation involving a video. He also faces the two delinquency-related counts.
Boebert was arrested on August 9 and booked into the Garfield County jail. He was released later that day after posting a $10,000 surety bond and is scheduled to return to court on August 19.
Rep. Boebert addressed her son's latest legal troubles in a statement following news of the arrest.
"I love my son," the Colorado Republican said, while acknowledging the seriousness of the allegations and expressing concern and prayers for everyone involved.
The new case adds to an already lengthy list of legal problems for Tyler Boebert.
In February 2024, Boebert was arrested following a string of vehicle break-ins and property thefts in Garfield County. Authorities accused him and others of breaking into vehicles and using stolen credit cards to make purchases. He ultimately reached a plea agreement in that case and is awaiting sentencing.
Boebert is also awaiting sentencing in a separate case stemming from a 2025 child abuse incident in Weld County. He pleaded guilty in that matter and is scheduled to be sentenced on September 4, while sentencing connected to the vehicle trespass and theft case is scheduled for September 10.
The latest allegations are significantly more serious and could further complicate Boebert's existing legal situation.
His mother, meanwhile, is seeking another term in Congress representing Colorado's 4th Congressional District. Lauren Boebert moved across the state politically ahead of the 2024 election after previously representing Colorado's 3rd Congressional District. She went on to win the heavily Republican 4th District seat.
The arrest comes as Boebert campaigns for reelection against Democratic challenger Eileen Laubacher.
Tyler Boebert has not been convicted of the newly filed charges, and the allegations against him remain accusations unless proven in court. His next scheduled appearance will provide the first major look at how the new felony case will proceed.
