Sen. Mitch McConnell is finally heading home after nearly two months away from public life — but he is not returning to the Capitol just yet.
The 84-year-old Kentucky Republican announced Thursday that he has been discharged from the rehabilitation center where he was recovering from a serious fall and a subsequent bout of pneumonia.
McConnell will continue an intensive physical-therapy regimen at home during the Senate's state work period. His statement did not provide a date for when he expects to resume voting in person.

The senator's own office put the next phase of his recovery in writing.
Senator McConnell's office said he was discharged on August 6 and will continue recovering at home. McConnell thanked friends, colleagues, Kentuckians, and the medical professionals who cared for him through the ordeal.
The statement also laid out the next phase of his recovery: intensive physical therapy at home throughout the Senate's state work period. McConnell said he plans to remain engaged with his staff and colleagues on Senate business, but the announcement did not say when doctors expect to clear him for travel or in-person votes.
That distinction is important. McConnell is no longer receiving inpatient rehabilitation, yet his recovery remains active and medically supervised rather than complete.
The announcement is unquestionably good news for McConnell and his family. It also confirms that his recovery is still serious enough to require intensive therapy rather than an immediate return to Washington.
The time away has now stretched beyond 50 days:
