Newark International Airport Grounds ALL Flights Due To Emergency

This was a close call.

All flights were grounded at Newark Liberty International Airport after a flight leaving the airport experienced engine failure shortly after taking off.

According to Newark authorities, a JetBlue plane that took off from Liberty International Airport experienced an engine failure, causing smoke to quickly fill the cabin.

NBC New York reported more on the engine failure that led to flights being grounded in Newark:

Passengers were evacuated off a plane at Newark Liberty International Airport after reported smoke in the cabin and engine failure that forced the flight to return to the ground, according to officials.

The JetBlue flight took off from Newark for West Palm Beach just before 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, but immediately returned to the transportation hub due to engine failure, a Port Authority source told NBC New York. The plane landed safely, and no injuries were reported.

After landing and exiting the runway, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said the crew of the Airbus 320 reported smoke in the cockpit. Passengers had to evacuate the aircraft via emergency slides, according to the FAA.

As a result of the emergency evacuation, flight operations were temporarily suspended at Newark Airport.
