Small Town’s Entire Police Force Resigns After Concerns About Mayor And Some City Council Members

The entire full-time police force and city manager in a small Georgia town resigned after expressing concerns about the mayor and some city council members.

“Milner Police Chief Lamar Bunn and the department's full-time officers have submitted resignations, with the department's last day set for Oct. 28,” WSB-TV reports.

City Administrator Tausha Grose also filed her resignation, with her last day scheduled for October 30.

According to the outlet, a resignation letter obtained under the Georgia Open Records Act cited concerns about the "judgment and decision-making of the Mayor and certain members of the City Council concerning the Police Department."

WSB-TV explained further:

The officer said he was particularly troubled by an allegation that Mayor Craig Timmons used his own money to put a tracking device on Bunn's truck. Restrictions on officers' ability to work off-duty jobs were also a factor in his decision to leave.

Bunn told Channel 2's Mark Winne he had consulted an outside agency about whether placing a tracking device on his truck would violate the law or his rights. He also said Timmons had asked him for the tracker back in front of multiple people while shaking his hand.

Bunn said he does not object to the city tracking his truck through proper channels.

During Monday's meeting, a person asked whether someone had placed a tracking device on the chief's truck and whether the mayor was responsible. Timmons responded, "I have no comment."

“It is with my extreme sorrow that our entire full-time police department has resigned, most of our part-time police. And also, I’ve also filed my resignation with the city clerk today,” Grose said, according to Fox News.

Bunn also said he had been falsely accused of having an affair with the city manager, the outlet noted.

“City Hall every day, it’s got a tracker on my truck, it was bought with personal funds and placed on my vehicle without the city council or my supervisor, city administrator knowing it,” Bunn said, according to Fox News.

“Here’s the thing, still I’m looking for a glimmer of hope to stay in the city. I don’t know why. It’s because I’ve devoted my life to Lamar County. 15, 16 years with the sheriff’s office and now I’m back here in this county. My dad was here in ’74 policing with his police department. I got roots here,” he added.

Fox News has more:

Other full-time employees at the police department echoed Bunn’s concerns, with Milner Police Captain Craig Walton demanding an investigation into Timmons in his resignation letter.

“I sincerely hope that the residents of Milner and the members of the City Council will take these concerns seriously and pursue an independent investigation into the mayor’s conduct, including any potential violations of his oath of office or the rights of city employees,” Walton said.

Several other police department employees also cited disagreements with the mayor and city council as the reason for their resignations.
