Democrats have secured their first flip of the 2026 midterms with a victory in the US territory of Guam.
The final unofficial results from the Guam Election Commission have revealed that Republicans lost control of the island's non-voting seat in the House of Representatives.
Republican incumbent James Moylan was defeated by Democrat Alicia Limtiaco, 51 percent to 49 percent. The Republican won the seat with 52 percent of the vote in 2022 and 2024.
The island, located in the western Pacific, is 15 hours ahead of the East Coast time zone, meaning that polls there closed before many on the mainland of the United States were even open on Tuesday.
Moylan congratulated his opponent, the territory's former Attorney General, on the victory in a statement issued after the race was called.
'First and foremost, I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Alicia Limtiaco on her victory in this year's General Election. Alicia ran an honorable campaign, and I have great respect for her dedication and commitment to serving our island,' Moylan said in a statement.
'The people of Guam have spoken, and I respect their decision. Elections are a vital part of our democracy, and while we may have different perspectives and ideas about the path forward, we all share a common love for our island and a desire to see our people thrive,' he added.
President Donald Trump, however, still found a reason to celebrate as results flowed in from the island.

After eight years of Democratic control, Republican Tony Ada has been projected to be elected governor of Guam.
President Trump celebrated the results even as they remain unofficial at this time, as he said it was 'hopefully an indication for things to come!'
'Guam, which has always been considered strongly Democrat, just had an early call for a REPUBLICAN Victory in the top spot, Governor — Congratulations to Tony Ada!' Trump wrote on Truth Social.
'Also, the Republicans have the Majority in the State Senate.'
With all precincts reported, Ada won with 51.5 percent of the vote, to his Democrat challenger Therese Terlaje's 48.1 percent.
In the House of Representatives, Democrats need to flip at least three seats.
Republicans currently hold 53 seats in the Senate, and Democrats need to pick up at least four of them to control the upper chamber in the next Congress.
Trump has crisscrossed the country and held a slew of campaign rallies in an effort to drive turnout for Republicans. He visited Kansas and Iowa on Sunday, and held a press conference at the Lincoln Memorial on Monday afternoon.
However, Trump's advisers have privately admitted that he can't bear the blame if the results are far from stellar for Republicans on Tuesday night.
'The president can only do so much,' one Trump political advisor told the Daily Mail. 'If we do fall short in the midterms, it's not because of the president's lack of trying or lack of effort.'
Throughout his many campaign stops, Trump has urged supporters at his rallies to act like he is on the ballot, because although his name is not, his legacy is, and he does not want to spend his last two years in office as a lame duck.
