Election prediction model shows last-minute swing for Republicans as Democrats switch votes and chaos unfolds at polling places nationwide: Midterms live

Election prediction model shows last-minute swing for Republicans as Democrats switch votes and chaos unfolds at polling places nationwide: Midterms live

As Americans rushed to the polls on Tuesday to cast their midterm ballots, there was chaos in several key battleground states, as prediction markets started sliding towards Republicans holding key states.

In Maine, incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins' office was vandalized with fake blood spelling out 'blood on her hands' in a last minute protest.

Collins is running against Democrat Troy Jackson in one of the races that will decide who takes control of congress.

In Westchester County, New York, voters have been told to stay in line after a glitch in machines saw some ballots rejected, with officials blaming the 'thickness' of ballot paper for causing widespread malfunctions and plunging the race into uncertainty.

Meanwhile in the hot races of Michigan and Alaska, disgruntled Democrats shocked reporters by announcing last minute vote switches.

In Alaska, lifelong blue-voters said they were going red after the 'decoy' Dan Sullivan scandal, which saw a 'spoiler' candidate added to the ballot - allegedly by Democrat Mary Peltola.

In Michigan, Jewish Democrats are voting for Republican Mike Rogers to keep Democrat candidate Abdul El-Sayed at bay.

In Florida, extreme weather has forced some polling stations to close and move, and election officials in North Carolina are already predicting delays in their results.

Prediction market Kalshi shifted odds for Democrats to hold the Senate late on Tuesday afternoon, saying that odds for them to gain Texas, Iowa, Michigan and Iowa all now favored Republicans.

With Republicans bracing for a 'blue tsunami' in the midterms, voting opened across the US on Tuesday morning as crucial Senate, House, and governor seats are up for grabs – and polling shows historical GOP strongholds have turned into political battlegrounds.

In the Senate, Democrats must flip four Republican-held seats to gain control. In the House, Democrats need to pick up just three seats.

The first polls close at 6pm ET and the last polls wrap up at 1am ET. Then the nation will wait as ballots are counted across the country to find out whether Republicans or Democrats will take power.

Kalshi predicts Republicans are ahead in major Senate races

Kalshi's latest predictions have Republicans leading in major battleground states like Texas, Iowa, Michigan and Maine.

Despite the latest predictions, they have a 74 percent chance of controlling the Senate and a 94 percent chance of controlling the House.

Maine Sen. Susan Collins' office vandalized with fake blood ahead of midterms showdown

The office of Maine Senator Susan Collins was vandalized overnight as protesters sprayed fake blood outside her official federal government office.

Graffiti reading 'BLOOD ON HER HANDS' was written in the fake blood outside Collins's office overnight Monday.

Collins is fighting for re-election against Democrat Troy Jackson in Tuesday's midterms, and the Republican told Fox News that her staff were 'undeterred' by the graffiti.

Democrats get the first Election Day flip: Republicans lose seat in Guam... but Trump has a reason to celebrate

Democrats have secured their first flip of the 2026 midterms with a victory in the US territory of Guam.

The final unofficial results from the Guam Election Commission have revealed that Republicans lost control of the island's non-voting seat in the House of Representatives.

Republican incumbent James Moylan was defeated by Democrat Alicia Limtiaco, 51 percent to 49 percent. The Republican won the seat with 52 percent of the vote in 2022 and 2024.

The island, located in the western Pacific, is 15 hours ahead of the East Coast time zone, meaning that polls there closed before many on the mainland of the United States were even open on Tuesday.

Alarming abuse reports, chained up activists and bitter rematches: The 10 House races that could flip Congress

Republicans are on course to lose the House of Representatives in less than a week, and even President Donald Trump fears his voters will stay home.

The GOP has controlled the White House, Senate and House since Trump returned to power in January 2025. But polling throughout the midterm cycle has consistently shown voters favoring Democrats, and the gap has widened in recent months.

Trump has openly questioned whether conservatives will turn out when his name isn't on the ballot.

What to expect on Election Night

Millions of voters across will head to the polls Tuesday to cast their ballots in the US midterm elections - where Republicans are scrambling to retain their narrow congressional majorities in the face of a so-called 'blue wave.'

Given that polls in some states won't close until the early hours of Wednesday morning, it could take some time to get a clear sense of who's winning what.

With an eye to those of us who hope to get some shut-eye, NYU professor Scott Galloway rounded up the first five congressional districts that will report their results this evening.

The results could offer some very early clues as to how the rest of the map might shape up.

At 6 pm, Kentucky's 6th District, which covers Lexington and nearby suburbs, and Indiana's 5th District, will report their results.

At 7 pm, Virginia begins reporting results in key races.

This includes its 1st Congressional District, which favors Republicans; Virginia's 2nd Congressional District, which is more competitive, and Virginia's 5th District, which went for Trump in 2024 by a 12-point margin.

Catch the full round-up from Galloway here.

Doug Burgum defends Trump reflecting pool event as the 'perfect spot' for final midterm speech

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum defended President Donald Trump's decision to focus his final campaign efforts at the Reflecting Pool at the Lincoln Memorial on the National Mall.

'It's a perfect spot to say to America, just like closing the border was a choice, just like cutting taxes was a choice, just like cutting regulation was a choice, Americans do not have to accept decline and squalor in our major cities,' Burgum said to reporters at the White House on Tuesday.

Burgum noted that under President Trump, fountains and parks were rebuilt, statues were refurbished, and 163 homeless encampments in the Washington DC's national parks were removed.

'Nobody wrote a story on that,' he said.

'All of that started with President Trump, because he said if we're going to have the greatest country in the world, why wouldn't we have the greatest capital in the world?'

Westchester emergency ballots to be given police escort to counting sites following glitch

Emergency ballots currently being cast in Westchester County, New York, after a glitch in voting machines will be escorted by police to a counting facility tonight, officials said.

Voting machines in the county have been unable to scan ballots, with officials blaming the 'thickness' of ballot paper for causing widespread malfunctions and plunging the race into uncertainty.

Republican Representative Mike Lawler told reporters that the emergency ballots cast will be transported via a police escort to be counted later this evening.

He said: 'Those ballots will not be opened at the polling site, they will be opened at the Board of Elections, where attorneys from both campaigns will be, where both parties will have representation, so that there be no question, that there be no conspiracy theory, and that every vote is counted.

'What I want to assure everybody is that every vote will be counted.'
