BEND, Ore. (KATU) — The teacher credited with throwing her phone at and wrestling with the gunman during a mass shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Ore., in mid-October spoke out for the first time on Friday.
Cassidy Schutz, a certified learning specialist at the school, said the whole event happened fast and she wished they had more time to react.
Below is Cassidy Schutz full statement about the school shooting.
"There are no words to describe the depth of sadness I am feeling following the events of October 15th. This is not a story. This is a horrific and heartbreaking tragedy, and it is our real lives. My thoughts are with those who were lost, their families, those who were hurt, and those who were there that day. My heart is with you. It all happened so fast, and I wish with everything in me that we had more time. The pain of this loss I will carry with me forever. There are no words for this unimaginable reality we are facing. My focus is on these families, our team, our school, and my own healing. As I continue to navigate this, I ask that you please give me the time, space, and privacy I need to heal. I will not be making any additional public statements at this time." KATU 2 ABC reported.
The mass shooting resulted in the death of three students and a teacher. The victims were identified as 5-year-old Rhoam Summer and 25-year-old Megan Lambert. The unidentified victims were 8 and 11 years old.
54-year-old teacher Becky Drury and 7-year-old student Saylor Graham are recovering from critical injuries.
Schutz was engaged with the shooter, who was 16 years old. At that time, 36-year-old Kaylub Giamanco followed the shooter into the school and fatally shot the gunman.
TGP reported earlier this month about the heroic dad who took action to take down the school shooter.
Silver Rail Elementary has been closed since the mass shooting, which took place in the middle of October. It will remain closed at least until November 6th.
