Lawler says FBI and DOJ are investigating group he claims is violating election law

New York GOP Rep. Mike Lawler said Sunday that the FBI and Justice Department are investigating a Democratic group that has spread lies about him and that it allegedly broke election law by not filing with the Federal Election Commission.

Lawler accused the Super PAC American Forge Coalition of fraud and that it is lying about his support of amnesty for criminal illegal migrants.

"In the last week, a Democrat Super PAC popped up," he said on CBS News' Face The Nation. "They have not filed with the FEC in clear violation of election law, spending millions of dollars saying that I support amnesty for criminal illegal aliens. It is a straight-up lie. They are trying to drive down Republican turnout.

"These are Democrats supporting this. They did this two years ago, and they're doing it again," he continued. "The American Forge Group. This is a straight-up fraud perpetrated on the voters, like they're doing in Alaska."

The American Forge Coalition, which appears on its website to be conservative, has donated and supported some candidates in other states, like Lynn Chapman, who is running to represent Nevada's deep red second district. Chapman has denied that she is running as a "spoiler" candidate to help Democrats unseat a conservative by splitting votes with the Republican.

Lawler said that the Justice Department and FBI have informed him that they are investigating the group and that he supports the investigation.

"They are violating election law, so people should be focused very clearly on what is actually happening in our elections," he said.

Lawler is running for reelection in New York, where he faces Democrat Cait Conley on Tuesday.
