James Burke fell asleep in his recliner last Saturday night at his home in Chattooga County, Georgia, and woke up to a strange man standing in his living room.
Burke recounted the story to Local 3 News, saying,
The next thing I know, some guy was telling me in my living room, 'Hey, you've got to get out of here. Your house is on fire.'
Burke's wife, his eleven adopted children, and one grandchild were all asleep in the home. The man, whom the Burke family referred to as 'Mr. Casey,' helped Burke to get his entire family out of the house.
The man later told the Burkes that his GPS had led him down the wrong road, turning onto Highway 114 on a route he had never driven before. From the road, Mr. Casey could see down the hill to the Burkes' home and saw the fire.
Thanks to a providential wrong turn and the heroic response of a Good Samaritan, all 14 members of the family made it safely out of the fire. The home and both of the family's vehicles were totally destroyed.
Burke told Local 3 News,
We are traumatized, of course, but you know what? We're going to turn this page, and we're gonna continue our lives because we have so much to live for. All of our babies made it out, and that is so amazing.
The Burke family have been foster parents for 15 years, welcoming more than 500 children through their home during that time. They have plans to rebuild their home so that they can continue to provide a home for children in crisis.
