Saul Anuzis Warns Medicaid Fraud ‘Hammering’ Seniors At Daily Caller Live

60 Plus Association President Saul Anuzis warned Thursday that rampant Medicaid fraud is devastating seniors on fixed incomes, calling for aggressive prosecution and systemic reform during a fireside chat at Daily Caller Live’s American Healthcare event.

“Fraud is a big deal for us,” Anuzis told Daily Caller Senior Editor Amber Duke at the Waldorf Astoria in Washington, D.C. “As it’s passed on from federal government to state government … what’s being exposed is unbelievable. I think this investigation, from a policy standpoint, is critical.” (RELATED: The Daily Caller Live Hosts Healthcare Leaders In Discussion On Affordability And Drug Prices)

Anuzis, who previously served as Michigan Republican Party chairman, said seniors depend heavily on Social Security with the average payout around $2,800 monthly, making even small price increases painful.

“Many of them depend on that as a primary source of income,” he said. “Whenever there’s even a small increase in prices, it has a big impact.”

While expressing gratitude for President Donald Trump’s initiatives to lower drug costs, Anuzis cautioned that the most favored nations pricing policy could backfire by discouraging pharmaceutical innovation.

“Artificially setting prices is a dangerous long-term policy,” he warned. “It may have a short-term benefit, but in the long run, it may hurt all of us.”

Asked for his top three healthcare reforms, Anuzis prioritized transparency, pharmacy benefit manager reform, and expanding consumer choice.

“Take a look at getting an MRI — you can look within 50 miles of where I live and there’s probably 20 different hospitals and the prices will range by thousands of dollars,” he said, arguing transparency alone would drive costs down.

On whether free-market healthcare is achievable without repealing Obamacare, Anuzis was blunt: “No. Unless there’s choice and unless people are forced to do it, we’re not going to do it.”
