JUST IN: Jaw-Dropping Marriage Certificate Changes Everything In Ilhan Omar Saga

A newly highlighted British marriage certificate is fueling fresh questions surrounding Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar's complicated marital history as federal investigators reportedly examine longstanding allegations involving her former husband.

The Minnesota congresswoman, who has repeatedly denied accusations that she married her brother to facilitate immigration benefits, is facing renewed scrutiny over family records, overlapping relationships and previously reported discrepancies in official paperwork.

At the center of the controversy is Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, a British citizen whom Omar legally married in 2009 before divorcing in 2017.

According to the New York Post, a 1997 British marriage certificate belonging to Leila Nur Said, believed to be Omar's sister, identifies her father as Nur Said Elmi.

Omar's late father, Nur Omar Mohamed, reportedly used that same name.

Multiple sources told the outlet they believe the man identified on the British document was Omar's father, raising questions about the family's relationships.

However, the certificate does not establish Elmi's parentage or prove that he and Omar are siblings.

Omar addressed the allegations during an interview with MS NOW host Chris Hayes this week, denying that her marriage was fraudulent.

Asked directly whether she was related to her former husband, Omar replied "not to my knowledge."

The response immediately attracted attention as questions about her marital history resurfaced.

Omar, who arrived in the United States as a Somali refugee in 1995, has consistently rejected accusations that she married Elmi to help him obtain immigration documents.

The controversy extends beyond the British certificate.

According to previously reported records, Omar and Elmi listed a Minneapolis-area address on their marriage application that was also used by Ahmed Abdisalan Hirsi, her longtime partner and the father of her three children.

Omar previously explained that she and Hirsi began a relationship in 2002 but never finalized their original marriage application.

She said they separated in 2008 before reconciling around 2012.

During that period, Omar remained legally married to Elmi, although she maintains their relationship ended in 2011.

She gave birth to her third child with Hirsi in 2012.

Additional questions emerged over reported joint tax filings involving Omar and Hirsi in 2014 and 2015, while her legal marriage to Elmi remained intact. Those filings were subsequently corrected.

Omar finalized her divorce from Elmi in 2017 and legally married Hirsi in January 2018.

Another development involved Elmi's reported withdrawal of a marriage-based green card application in 2019 after immigration officials requested additional documentation.

Meanwhile, a Minneapolis Somali blogger claimed in a 2020 interview that Omar previously introduced Elmi to community members as her brother.

"No one knew there had been a wedding [to Elmi] until the media turned up the marriage certificate years later," the blogger alleged.

That account has not been independently established, and the allegation remains disputed.

The renewed attention comes after Homeland Security Investigations agents searched Omar's Washington, D.C., residence on Oct. 12.

In a court filing Wednesday, federal prosecutors reportedly referred to the congresswoman as "Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar."

The filing sought to prevent the search warrant from being publicly released, according to the New York Post.

Although the name appearing in the document has generated speculation, using an alternative name in a legal filing does not itself establish wrongdoing.

Nor has publicly disclosed evidence conclusively demonstrated that Ilhan Omar and Elmi are siblings or that their marriage was fraudulent.

Elmi has since returned to Britain, where he pursued academic work at Bristol University, according to the report.

The congresswoman and Leila Nur Said did not respond to the outlet's requests for comment.

For Omar, the latest documents have revived questions she has spent years confronting.

Whether investigators uncover evidence supporting the allegations remains uncertain, but the combination of marriage records, conflicting timelines and federal investigative activity has placed the Minnesota Democrat's personal history back under intense scrutiny.
