Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic nominee to be Michigan's next U.S. senator, floated plans involving leveraging Trump administration officials if his party wrests control of the Senate in the 2026 midterm elections.
El-Sayed told CNN's Jake Tapper on Sunday Democrats can hold the Trump administration "accountable" if elected by using the powers reserved for the majoroty party, such as subpoena power, to start "hauling up people like RFK Jr." The 41-year-old politician and epidemiologist endorsed by Bernie Sanders beat Democratic Michigan Rep. The FBI launched the probe at the behest of two Democrat senators, one of whom resigned from office in disgrace before the bureau concluded the investigation of Sessions. The senators, Patrick Leahy of Vermont and Al Franken of Minnesota, wrote to then-FBI Director James Comey to demand an investigation. In 2017, Trump fired Comey, who became a Trump enemy.
The probe lasted a year, from May 2017 to May 2018.
It began on May 10, one day after Trump fired Comey as FBI director. Sessions had already recused himself from the Russia investigation into Trump. Later that month, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed Robert Mueller as special counsel to investigate the alleged Russia collusion.

In the past decade, government grants to nonprofits and the number of nonprofits that receive tax money has doubled, raising questions about whether public money is being wasted, an investigation by The Center Square found.
In 2016, federal, state and local governments gave $149.5 billion in grants to about 56,000 nonprofits registered with the IRS, an analysis of nonprofit tax returns shows. In 2020, that number went up to nearly $310 billion with more than 110,000 nonprofits receiving taxpayer funding. Two years later, the numbers peaked at $319 billion though about 10,000 fewer nonprofits received government cash, the data shows.
David Williams, president of the Taxpayers Protection Alliance, said there is not enough accountability or oversight of the money that goes to nonprofits.
