WW2 vet credits “fish and chips” for allowing him to reach 107

Owen Filer is believed to be the oldest man in Wales at 107 years old. The World War II veteran just celebrated his birthday on October 19, surrounded by family and military personnel who were there to honor his service.

When asked his secret to a long life, he told the BBC,

I've never overeaten... I lived on fish and chips. Fish and chips, a full meal, a scoop full of chips and a fish.

On a more serious note, he went on to say,

How I got here I'll never know, but I've met a lot of people who have admired me and asked me how I do it. No secret recipe, except that I always worked all my life. You just live properly, and I've always done it.

Living properly for Filer included having 4 children, 10 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. A very proper life indeed.

One of the veterans who helped with the birthday celebration said of Filer,

He's just a really nice, down-to-earth guy. He still gets up in the morning, he puts a clean shirt on, puts his tie on, cleans his shoes, and he gets up with purpose. I think we can all take a leaf out of his book on that one, for sure.

If we all lived a bit more of a proper life, the world would be a much better place.

And eating more fish and chips wouldn't hurt either!
