The Bangor Police launched their investigation after receiving a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
During the investigation, police executed a search warrant to seize evidence.
The evidence and investigation led police to apply for and receive an arrest warrant for Jonathan Houck, 33, of Bangor.
He was arrested and transported to the Penobscot County Jail, where he faces six counts of possession of child sexual abuse material and four counts of violation of privacy.
Police did not provide many details on the investigation.
Until recently, Houck was an assistant professor at Husson University in Bangor.
His page on their website has been deleted, but an archived version of the page from April shows that he holds a PhD in physical education and worked as an assistant professor in the school’s College of Science and Humanities.
Husson issued a public statement on Facebook regarding the incident, without naming Houck.
“Husson University is aware of an ongoing police investigation and is complying with all law enforcement requests in a timely manner. The individual under investigation is no longer employed by Husson University. The university is in close contact with impacted students to ensure their needs are met and continuity of education continues,” said the College.
University officials reportedly told WABI that Houck was escorted off campus on Sept. 21, when they first learned that he was under investigation.
