Republican Harriet Hageman has won the open-seat race for the U.S. Senate in Wyoming, defeating Democrat James Byrd. Hageman, currently the state's sole U.S.
House member, will succeed Cynthia Lummis, who announced in December 2025 that she would not seek a second term.
Hageman, 64, was born and raised on a ranch near Fort Laramie and worked as a trial attorney for more than three decades before entering politics.
She previously ran unsuccessfully for governor in the 2018 Republican primary and served as a Republican National Committee member.
In 2022, with the endorsement of President Donald Trump, she easily defeated incumbent Rep. Liz Cheney in the Republican primary for Wyoming's at-large House seat and went on to win the general election. She has served in the House since January 2023, sits on the Natural Resources and Judiciary committees, and has been a consistent supporter of Trump's legislative priorities, including tax cuts and border measures.
Wyoming has not elected a Democrat to the U.S. Senate in more than 50 years. According to the Cook Political Report, the state's partisan lean is among the strongest in the country for Republicans, as recent presidential results and the Cook Partisan Voting Index place it well to the right of the national average.
Lummis previously won her seat in 2020 with roughly 73 percent of the vote. The retiring senator has spent decades in politics and cited the scheduling demands of the U.S. Senate as a primary factor in announcing her retirement.
