The headline sounds like satire.
It is not.
Elon Musk has reportedly invested roughly $1 billion in Skydance, the newly expanded media company that now owns CNN.
That gives Musk an indirect ownership interest in the corporate empire sitting above the cable news network.
So yes, in the normal economic sense of the term, Elon Musk is now reportedly a part-owner of CNN.
But there is an important distinction: part-owner does not mean controller, chief executive, or editor-in-chief.
Semafor broke the news Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter. The outlet reported that Musk invested roughly $1 billion in Skydance as David Ellison’s company works to cut costs, strengthen its balance sheet, and support its stock price following a massive acquisition.
The report said Musk’s deal came together around the same time as equity investments from other Skydance backers, including board member Laurene Powell Jobs. Musk and the company did not immediately respond to Semafor’s requests for comment, so the precise percentage, share class, voting rights, and other terms of his reported stake have not yet been publicly detailed.
Semafor also reported that Musk was one of several wealthy investors Ellison had considered bringing into the company. The timing matters because the capital arrived as Skydance began absorbing one of the largest entertainment acquisitions in history while publicly promising aggressive cost reductions and a more technology-driven operation.

The ownership chain is straightforward.
Skydance announced on October 6 that it had completed its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery.
The combined company specifically listed CNN and CBS News among its major news assets.
The same corporate portfolio now includes HBO, Paramount, Warner Bros., Paramount+, HBO Max, CBS Sports, TNT Sports, and a massive collection of film and television franchises. Skydance said the new company reaches more than 200 million streaming subscribers across its platforms and controls what it called the industry’s most diverse film and television library.
Skydance also said its Class B shares began trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker SKYD. Its stated plan is to operate the combined business as a technology-forward media company while targeting at least $6 billion in annualized cost savings within three years.
The company committed to releasing at least 30 theatrical films per year and said the enlarged group already had more than 180 television shows. In other words, Musk’s reported investment is not in a stand-alone cable channel; it is in an enormous publicly traded parent company that owns CNN among many other businesses.
The SEC filing officially confirms the legal structure behind that announcement and identifies Skydance Corporation as the acquirer in the transaction completed on October 6.
Warner Bros. Discovery became a wholly owned subsidiary of Skydance when the merger closed, creating a formal change in control of the company that housed CNN.
The filing places the aggregate merger consideration at approximately $78 billion, funded through a combination of debt and equity financing rather than a simple purchase of one network or division.
Warner Bros. Discovery’s former public shares ceased trading on Nasdaq, and its shareholders were left with the right to receive the merger consideration rather than a continuing direct stake in the old WBD company.
The filing says the transaction closed on October 6 after the previously announced merger agreement took effect. It also records a formal change in control, the departure of WBD’s former directors and senior officers, and the installation of the acquiring company’s leadership at the subsidiary.
That matters because CNN is not separately traded and Musk did not purchase CNN shares directly. His reported investment sits at the Skydance parent level, where the value of CNN is bundled with the company’s studios, streaming services, cable networks, sports rights, and other assets.
CNN was part of Warner Bros. Discovery.
Warner Bros. Discovery is now wholly owned by Skydance.
Musk has reportedly made a roughly $1 billion equity investment in Skydance.
That is how Elon Musk winds up with an indirect financial stake in CNN.

What the investment does not establish is just as important.
There is no public evidence in the current reporting that Musk has received control of CNN, a Skydance board seat, management authority, or any role in the network’s editorial decisions. Until the investment terms are disclosed, it would be inaccurate to claim that Musk personally runs CNN or can dictate its coverage.
The Associated Press reported after the merger that CNN chairman and CEO Mark Thompson would remain editor-in-chief and continue leading the network separately from CBS News. Ellison publicly promised that CNN and CBS News would remain editorially independent, while a merger settlement requires a five-member editorial-independence board to be established within 180 days.
Those promises will be watched closely because the corporate parent ultimately appoints that oversight board. But Musk’s reported minority investment, by itself, does not prove that CNN’s newsroom is now taking orders from him.
It does mean one of the world’s most prominent critics of legacy media now has money invested in one of the world’s largest legacy-media companies.
And the history between Musk and the Ellison family makes the deal even more striking.
Semafor noted that Musk has publicly praised the Ellisons and Skydance. Larry Ellison previously backed Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, now X, and served on Tesla’s board, while media executives have openly speculated about a larger business partnership involving Starlink and Skydance’s global content portfolio.
No such distribution partnership has been announced as part of this investment. For now, the confirmed news is narrower: sources say Musk put roughly $1 billion into Ellison’s Skydance.

He reportedly put about BILLION into David Ellison's Skydance, which took over Warner Bros. Discovery this month
So people who have ownership stakes over CNN include Elon Musk and Trump ally David… pic.twitter.com/g6AQKEwpqx
The media landscape just took another astonishing turn.
Musk owns X, leads SpaceX and Tesla, and now reportedly holds an equity stake in the company that owns CNN, CBS News, Warner Bros., HBO, and Paramount.
That investment does not give him any publicly disclosed authority over CNN’s journalists or executives.
It does give him a reported financial interest in the corporation that owns the network.
Yes, it is true.
