Medical power couple wed on Jekyll Island and settled into coastal mansion... then husband was found dead in Subaru after vile charges, leaving brilliant wife to pick up the pieces

A brilliant doctor's picture-perfect life has been shattered after her neurosurgeon husband was hit with child porn charges and seemingly took his own life.

Dr Melanie Clark, 50, a radiologist, and Dr Shawn Clark tied the knot on September 13, 2008, on Jekyll Island, an ultra exclusive millionaire's paradise in Georgia.

Eighteen years on, he was found dead in his Subaru Crosstrek after a grand jury returned an indictment against him and Melanie filed for divorce.

Melanie has now been forced to juggle a demanding job and caring for two teenage children while coming to terms with her husband's alleged crimes and shocking death.

The couple met in 2000 when Melanie was a medical student at a hospital in New Orleans, where Shawn had been serving as chief resident of neurosurgery, according to their profile on wedding website The Knot.

Their friendship quickly blossomed into romance, with the pair staying together through a long distance courtship after they moved to different states in 2001.

Shawn, who was living in Virginia at the time, got his pilot's license and bought a small single-engine plane so he could easily visit Melanie in Pittsburgh.

He popped the question on the wing of his plane, which the couple posed with in their wedding photos, eight years after they struck up a romance.

The couple later moved to Mobile, Alabama. Shawn opened a new practice, Clark Neurosurgery, and Melanie worked at two local hospitals.

She also worked as an assistant professor of radiology at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine.

They welcomed two children, now ages 13 and 15, during the course of their marriage and purchased a sprawling $2 million mansion in Fairhope, an affluent coastal suburb of Mobile.

But their seemingly loving family was split apart earlier this year after Shawn, now 59, was arrested on child pornography charges, court filings show.

The Mobile County Sheriff's Office Internet Crimes Against Children Unit launched an investigation into Shawn in March 2026 after receiving a tip about possible child sexual abuse material linked to IP addresses at his home and medical office.

Investigators determined that some of the images discovered in the case were of real children, while others were AI-generated, authorities said.

The neurosurgeon was arrested on September 3, 2026, after sheriff's investigators and FBI agents raided his 5,437sq ft Fairhope home and his office in Mobile, according to jail records.

Shawn was subsequently charged with five counts of possession of child pornography and five for production of child pornography in Mobile County, a criminal complaint said.

He bonded out of Mobile County Metro Jail on September 14, but was booked into Baldwin County jail just one hour later on four additional counts of possession, an arrest warrant revealed.

While in custody, Shawn attempted suicide, the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office said in a press release.

Corrections officers found him unconscious in his cell around 3.30am on September 17 after he cut himself in an attempt to take his own life.

Shawn, who pleaded not guilty, is seen in court on September 8. Although he was due back in court next month, he will never stand trial for the charges he faced

Officers immediately rendered aid and Shawn was rushed to a nearby hospital in stable condition. He was placed back in jail after being cleared by medical officials.

The neurosurgeon was released from Baldwin County jail on October 10, according to jail records.

He was arrested again on October 30 after a 10-count grand jury indictment was filed against him in Mobile County Circuit Court, court records showed.

Shawn, who denied the charges against him, was released on a signature bond.

His medical license was suspended by the Medical Licensure Commission in the wake of his arrests.

He was due back in court next month, but will now never stand trial for the charges he faced.

The doctor was found dead inside his Subaru on Monday afternoon, Mobile police said. He had been parked in a lot of a vacant building that once served as an urgent care facility.

The parking lot was just around the corner from his medical office, police told WKRG.

His cause of death remains under investigation, though officers suspect he died by suicide. Authorities have provided little about the scene, but did confirm Clark had not suffered a gunshot wound.

'The car itself is still intact,' Mobile Police Department Public Information Officer Roderick Miles told the outlet. 'We don't believe that this is a foul play or act of violence. So everything was still intact.'

Shawn's attorney, Christine Hernandez, told WALA that she was the one who discovered his body and called 911 for help.

Shawn was in the middle of a divorce battle and had been barred from seeing his children at the time of his death, Baldwin County Circuit Court filings revealed.

Melanie filed for divorce on September 9, alleging 'incompatibility of temperament and irreconcilable differences,' her complaint for divorce said.

She argued that the pair could 'no longer live together as husband and wife,' and stated that a divorce is 'absolutely necessary' for her health and welfare, the filing said.

The radiologist's complaint also highlighted the allegations against Shawn, noting that he was 'involved in various inappropriate and some believed to be illegal activities which have caused a breakdown of the marriage.'

She sought sole custody of her children and requested that Shawn be denied visitation 'based on the criminal charges pending against him,' the filing said.

A judge on October 1 awarded Melanie exclusive sole temporary custody of the two children, a temporary order showed. Shawn was ordered to 'have no contact with the minor children whatsoever.'

Melanie was granted temporary exclusive possession of the family's five-bedroom mansion, the order said.

She was also instructed to put Shawn's clothes and other personal effects into a 2023 Subaru Crosstrek that the neurosurgeon was permitted to use while the divorce proceedings were underway, the filing said.

The judge's temporary order further noted that the couple's marital home was to be put up for sale. According to active real estate agent listings, the residence was placed on the market on October 22.

Contacted by the Daily Mail on Tuesday and asked if she'd like to comment on her husband's death, Melanie said: 'No thank you.'
