Melania furiously turned Trump against his own deportation chief Stephen Miller after her own friends were removed by ICE

First Lady Melania Trump is the reason Donald Trump turned on the man who built his mass deportation operation.

The first lady complained earlier this year to the president that people she knew were being arrested and deported from the country, according to the Wall Street Journal. Soon after, Trump began telling aides that Stephen Miller had gone too far.

Miller, the deputy White House chief of staff and one of Trump's longest-serving aides, has orchestrated the most expansive immigration crackdown in modern American history in the West Wing, with the president's full backing.

Trump swung back and forth on it all year, at times telling the same aides he wanted the operation to go harder still, according to the Journal.

Republican lawmakers in Texas and Florida were complaining to the White House over raids on Home Depot parking lots, chicken processing plants and construction sites, hauling off workers with no criminal records.

Trump stormed back into the Oval Office after campaigning on mass deportations for both legal and illegal migrants.

However, two years later his electoral mandate appears to have fallen apart. The same voters who handed Trump the key to the White House, on Tuesday, flipped seven Senate seats and handed Democrats control of both chambers of Congress.

The turn inside the White House had started 10 months earlier in Minneapolis after ICE killings of American citizens caused uproar throughout the country.

The killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti became a watershed moment for the White House

Renee Good, a 37-year-old writer and mother of three, was shot dead in her car on Portland Avenue on January 7 by an ICE officer who fired through her windshield during Operation Metro Surge.

The Department of Homeland Security said Good had tried to ram agents, a version witnesses on the street disputed.

Seventeen days later Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care nurse at the Minneapolis VA, was shot in the back by a Border Patrol officer as he filmed agents making an arrest.

Miller and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem defended the officers and branded the dead nurse a 'domestic terrorist.'

At the time, Vice President JD Vance amplified their messaging and refused to apologize to Pretti's family during an interview with the Daily Mail.

Trump, meanwhile, told aides he was worried about the videos of the killing.

He ordered then-press secretary Karoline Leavitt to distance him from his own team's comments, then sent immigration czar Tom Homan to Minneapolis to fix it.

More than nine months on, no agent has been charged over either death.
