Vice President JD Vance took to X to lay out the primary reason he believes Republicans took a beating in the Nov. 3 elections.
“The reason we lost is the war.”
Vance, who has been critical of foreign interventions like the one in Iran, was nevertheless direct in his post, in which he contended that 2024 Trump-Vance voters had grown angry with the administration in 2026 over a war they felt was unnecessary.
This is maybe the most thorough and honest diagnosis of an election defeat that we’ve ever seen from a politician at Vance’s level. And he’s right. https://t.co/djoTRuogz6

“If you’d like to argue it was worth it, that losing the Senate for the next 6 years was worth it, then do so. Argue it was a worthwhile cost to pay. Agree or disagree, that’s at least honest.”
The war in Iran has cost taxpayers $47.1 billion so far, according to reports.
Vance added that the GOP would have to have honest conversations about the conduct of the war in Iran, saying, “Everyone knows why we lost. And any honest conversation about where we go from here must start there.”
President Trump has hinted at a possible expansion of the war, while Iranian leadership has warned that the conflict could spread beyond the Middle East if attacks continue.
