Final Republican who voted to impeach Trump loses reelection to progressive newcomer

Republican Rep. David Valadao of California lost his reelection bid on Wednesday to Democrat Randy Villegas, a progressive political newcomer.

Villegas won with 66.4% of the vote in the state's 22nd District as of Thursday morning, with 57% of the votes counted, according to the Associated Press.

Valadao was the final Republican still serving in Congress who voted to impeach President Donald Trump after the Jan. 6, 2021 protests in the nation's capital. Some of the 10 who voted for impeachment retired, while others, such as Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney, were defeated by challengers who had Trump's backing, the Washington Examiner reported.

The Republican faced a number of challenges in the race, including a redistricting effort that changed the race in the Cook Political Report last November from "lean Republican" to "toss-up." He also faced criticism for voting to cut federal healthcare programs.

Villegas' campaign was boosted by endorsements from Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and other sitting Democrats in Congress.
